SHOPPING: Public Market offers pick-up

Published by Susie Hume on May 01, 2007
Patrons of the Public Market will notice an added convenience beginning Thursday, May 5. The "Veggie-Valet" service, based on a service at the Ferry Building Marketplace in San Francisco, will let customers leave their purchases at a designated booth and then pull their vehicle up to load them.

"We've been looking at doing some changes with the traffic and also making the experience more pedestrian-friendly, especially for those who buy a lot," says James Farr, assistant director of Rochester's Bureau of Recreation. "It's one way that we can help with people in our Market."

The Veggie-Valet service is just one of several changes that the Public Market will be implementing this month. To improve traffic circulation, the city has increased the number of off-site parking spots across from the Union Street entrance and has relocated and expanded the handicap parking area. And there'll be additional guides on hand to help with traffic flow.

Three pick-up spots by the information booth have been set aside for the Veggie-Valet program. Customers can drop off their purchases at the booth - staffed by volunteers from Friends of the Public Market - take a call tag, and then drive up and pick up their purchases. A separate system has been set up for commercial pick-ups.

The Public Market is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Saturdays from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. More information on the new parking system or the Veggie-Valet program is available at 428-6907.
