This week's calls to citizenship include the following events and activities. (All are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.)
  • Making the historic Susan B. Anthony neighborhood a tourist destination is the focus of a planning charrette on Saturday, June 9, sponsored by the Rochester Regional Community Design Center. Residents, developers, and community leaders are encouraged to attend the session, which will be held at the Underground Café, 480 West Main Street, at 8:30 a.m.
  • The Small Business Council of Rochester and the Greater Rochester Enterprise will sponsor a discussion about economic development, "Eyes on the Future," on Tuesday, June 12. Panelists will include Daniel Gundersen, Upstate Chair of the Empire State Development Corporation; Ken Schoetz, Chief Operating Officer of the Upstate Development Corporation; and the directors of economic developmentfrom three of the nation's fastest growing regions. The event will be held at St. John Fisher College and is free with registration in advance or $25 at the door. Registration: Cindy DeVoldre, 256-4619.
  • A large number of African-American and Hispanic students in Rochester fail to graduate from high school in four years. The Peace Action Collaborative and the Alliance for Quality Education will sponsor a program to discuss the problem, "Closing the Racial Achievement Gap," at noon Thursday, June 7, at Third Presbyterian Church, 4 Meigs Street.
  • Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, will be the speaker at a program onSunday, June 10, sponsored by the Interfaith Alliance. Gandhi's speech, "Peace, Not War, in the Name of God," will be held in the Schultz Center of Nazareth College at 3 p.m.
  • The Town of Brighton will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, June 13, to consider a proposed exemption from the town's single-family zoning moratorium. The hearing, which concerns a property at 32 Southern Parkway, will be held at the Brighton Town Hall, 2300 Elmwood Avenue, at 7:30 p.m.
  • The 19th Ward Community Association will host a workshop on public safety in the neighborhood on Saturday, June 9. Home security, personal safety, gang activity, illegal drug use, and community resources are among the topics that will be discussed. The event will be held at Unity Health Systems, St. Mary's Auditorium, 89 Genesee Street, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Information: 328-6571.
  • "Cleaning the Air with Alternative Fuels," a workshop examining the availability, characteristics, and use of alternative fuels, will be held on Thursday, June 14. Sponsored by Genesee Region Clean Communities, the event takes place at the RIT Inn, 5257 West Henrietta Road, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Information and registration: dlkeefe@rocheseter.rr.com.
  • "Stand for Peace in a Time of War" vigils continue to be organized by several local faith organizations. The next events, all on Thursday, June 7: First Unitarian Church vigil, at 220 South Winton Road in front of the church, 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.; Downtown Presbyterian Church and the Episcopal Church of St. Luke and St. Simon Cyrene vigils, at the intersection of Fitzhugh Street and Broad Street, 7:30 to 9 a.m., and at the intersection of Park Avenue and Culver Road, 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. First Unitarian Church will hold a second vigil on Tuesday, June 12, from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
