The Rochester Step-Off Educational Foundation runs dance-centric programs for city youth that focus on improving academic performance while teaching the African-American dance form called stepping. Stepping is a spectacle, an elaborately choreographed, rhythmic team dance, full of clapping and stomping. The foundation's annual competition, the Rochester Step-Off, comes to the Blue Cross Arena Saturday, June 9. Teams from area schools and recreation centers compete against each other, and graduating high school participants receive scholarship money (the organization will give out $12,500 this year).
The Step-Off starts at noon. The Blue Cross Arena is located at 1 War Memorial Sq. Tickets cost $8.75 and can be purchased at Mad Flavor Clothing, 185 Lyell Ave; all Ticketmaster locations; or by calling 232-1900.
