MEDIA: WROC AIRS 'DEMOCRACY NOW'

After three years of persistent effort, Metro Justice has succeeded in bringing Democracy Now! to Rochester-area radio. The alternative news program hosted by Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez airs on WROC 950-AM weeknights from 8 to 9 p.m.

Metro Justice has waged an aggressive but unsuccessful campaign to persuade management at WXXI to carry the program. Organizer Jon Greenbaum says Metro Justice delivered more than 5,000 post cards to the public-broadcasting institution requesting the program.

"We met with WXXI's board of directors and major contributors, but they said no and wouldn't veer from that position," says Greenbaum. "They felt Democracy Now! was advocacy journalism and Amy Goodman's interviews did not reflect mainstream views. That wasn't true then and is even less true now. Hers was a dissenting voice, but not all of her guests were against the war in Iraq. Now that the tide has turned, dissenting views are the loudest part of the mainstream."

An anonymous donor, Greenbaum says, has paid WROC to air Democracy Now! for two years.
