The Ellwanger Garden on Mt. Hope Ave. is one of our city's hidden treasures, a fairy-tale collection of peonies, roses, and lilies that is 140 years old. Rochester's secret garden is open to the public twice a year (with group tours available by appointment), and the Peony Weekend is one of those times. On Saturday and Sunday, June 9 and 10, you can celebrate the giant flowers, and the local landmark's birthday. Plant divisions from the garden will be sold on both days for those with a green thumb, and cake will be served at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
The Ellwanger Garden is located at 625 Mt. Hope Avenue. Peony Weekend runs 10 a.m.-4 p.m. There is a suggested donation of $5. Call 546-7029 or visit www.landmarksociety.org/events for more details.
