ROCK: Senses Fail (6/16)

Published by Frank De Blase on Jun 13, 2007

Senses Fail is growing up and maybe - just maybe - so am I. I saw the group a while back (I think it was Warped Tour) and I hated it. I hated it for every reason I've ever hated all those other whiny, minor-keyed crackers whose performance is more of a masturbatory spree at the audience's expense. Then, I saw the band at Water Street Music Hall last summer with Saosin and Bleeding Through. The band's rage was much more focused and the vocals hugged the dynamic push and pull of the rest of the band.

Senses Fail still brings it to the edge, but the punk energy and urgency doesn't stray into hysterics. I guess this just proves that you can't write a band off right away. Senses Fail is still heavy and fast and comes from a youthful heart, but now the emperor is actually wearing clothes... and mixing it up in the pit. See you there.

Senses Fail plays the Zumiez Couch Tour with Revolution Mother and the Vans Skate Team Saturday, June 16, 1 p.m., in the parking lot at the Marketplace, 1 Miracle Mile Drive. Free. For more information call 427-2810.
