The "sweet science" may have recently taken some hits (sorry) as a spectator sport, but that's no reason not to come out for the two big Rochester boxing events this week. On Thursday, June 14, "War at the Armory II" brings two-time heavyweight champ Hasim "The Rock" Rahman to Rochester. He fights Tauras Sykes in the first step toward regaining his title. The night also promises the world's most recognizable announcer, Michael Buffer ("Let's get ready to rummmmmmmmblllle!"), and four other fights. Note that the fight will be televised on Versus (cable channel 69). "War at the Armory" takes place at the Main Street Armory, 900 East Main Street, with doors at 6 p.m. Tickets cost $25-$75 and are available online at www.rochesterboxing.com.
If you want a more intimate spectator experience, the Rochester Saint Martin Boxing Club holds an amateur boxing afternoon with 20 bouts featuring area pugilists Saturday, June 16, a the Stardust Room at Edgerton Park, off Lake Avenue. Bouts start at 3:30 p.m. Tickets cost $4-$8 and are available by calling 232-1960.
