Apparently I'm the only one who doesn't have fond memories of running wild and loose with the fake ID (or the real ID...) at the old Barfly. Either way, Barfly is out and Syxx (359 East Avenue) is in - remodeled and now open for business. I stopped by its opening party last Saturday to check out the scene as the crowd from the night's free Jazz Fest shows filtered in. The main room, a cavernous dance floor with a prominent DJ booth and a number of classy flat-screens, narrowed into the packed parking-lot patio where much of the crowd mingled. Air wafting from the Pita Pit next door gave the outside bar an almost festival feel, while inside I spotted some of event sponsor 98PXY's on-air personalities spinning some choice cuts. And I've got to say that Gwen's "The Sweet Escape" definitely matched the bar's black-and-gold motif.
I talked with co-owner Brian Gray about the name, which has a couple connotations - from the number of partners involved in the club to the six months they've given themselves to make it work. "It's tough to have six people agree on anything and that's what we came up with," Gray says about the name.
Gray says the nightclub theme caters to a mixed audience, and from the look of Saturday's crowd it was working. The dance floor was littered with all types, from businessmen to the gym crowd to some very pleasant-looking girls in sexy nurse costumes hocking Dr. McGillicuddy's peppermint schnapps.
The club plans to have steady DJs Thursday through Saturday nights, with the possibility of live outdoor music in the works. Definitely worth a look if you're around the East End. Check out Syxx Wednesdays and Thursdays 7 p.m.-2 a.m., Friday and Saturdays 4 p.m.-2 a.m.
