Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, the moniker of one Owen Ashworth, constructs lo-fi anthems for the stereotypically downtrodden nerd. Spinning narratives about fading love, lost youth, and helplessly drifting romantics, Casiotone sings about characters that rub together in the confusion of urban life as the ticking clock of mom and dad's middle-class goodwill readies to ring. It's the kind of hopeless situation that goes well with a dance beat and a virtual army of keyboards.
Usually a one-man, bedroom four-track operation, Ashworth will be helped by his friends The Donkeys on this full-band tour.
The single EP for "Bobby Malone Moves Home," one of Casiotone's latest releases, actually features several live cuts from the band's performance last year at the Bug Jar. In between tracks he challenges the crowd, saying, "I heard on the internet that Rochester dances." The challenge is out. Bring your dancing shoes.
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, The Donkeys, and Baby Shivers Boutique play Sunday, July 8, at Bug Jar, 219 Monroe Avenue, 454-2966, 8-11 p.m., $6-$8. 18+.
