It seems like it's hard for female jazz vocalists to get away from doing phony Billie Holiday or a generic Ella Fitzgerald impressions. Diana Krall avoids both with her bassy, assured vocals and restrained piano accompaniment. She's the everywoman piano-singer you'd like to have in-house at your local jazz club - relaxed and classy without being boring or derivative.
Krall's latest record, the 2006 collection of standards "From This Moment On," was nominated for Best Jazz Vocal Grammy earlier this year. And while she was recently featured on Verve's "We All Love Ella: Celebrating The First Lady Of Song," her interpretations definitely avoid imitation.
Diana Krall performs with Chris Botti Monday, July 9, at CMAC, 4355 Lakeshore Drive, Canandaigua, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $28-$100. For tickets call 232-1900 or visit www.ticketmaster.com.
