If you were one of the 9,000-plus fans who attended Chuck Mangione's recent Friends & Love concerts, you witnessed musicians getting better with age. Among them, playing solo after solo on flute and saxophones, was the wonderful Gerry Niewood. Niewood was Mangione's right-hand man in 1970 at the first Friends & Love concert and he provides extraordinary solos in Mangione's band today. Over the decades he has also worked with Gil Evan, Gerry Mulligan, Liza Minnelli, Grover Washington Jr. and many others. And this weekend he'll reunite with a former member of Mangione's band, guitarist Bob Sneider, at the Strathallan.
Gerry Niewood joins Bob Sneider's Trio Friday, July 13, 8:30 p.m.-midnight and Saturday, July 14, 9:30 p.m.-midnight at the Strathallan, 550 East Avenue. No cover.
