JAZZ/BLUES: Bop Fest 2007

Published by Frank De Blase on Jul 18, 2007

It's fitting to have r&b wildman Barrence Whitfield help Tom Kohn celebrate 25 years of boppin' at the Bop Shop. Whitfield's "Dig Yourself" was one of the many platters I've purchased over the years after hearing "Bloody Mary" blasting for the first time through the record store's speakers. Kohn has always championed the underground, the left-of-center, the profound, and profane, like Whitfield and countless local artists like The Essentials, whose sax player Mark Bradley will join international rock 'n' roll sensations The Hi-Risers (with two more ex-Essentials) to back up Whitfield.

Kohn has shared his love of music with anyone who comes through The Bop Shop doors. Come share the joy with him when the store celebrates its 25th anniversary Friday, July 20, with The Respect Duo, 6-8 p.m.; Saturday, July 21, with some honky tonk with a horn from Brokedown, The Hi-Risers, and Barrence Whitfield at 3 p.m.; and Sunday, July 22, with Rochester blues legend Joe Beard and Delta via Boston gut bucket blues cats The Tarbox Ramblers, 3-6 p.m. Free.
