Unfortunately, these workers are often denied living wages, fair working conditions, and basic human dignity by the hotels that employ them. The average housekeeper salary at the Rochester Crowne Plaza is $7.30 an hour, and many workers earn well below the federal poverty line and are unable to afford health care.
Many organizations, including the AFL-CIO, Rochester CLUE (Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice), and Metro Justice are fighting for Rochester's Crowne Plaza employees to be able to form a union to fight for their rights. Crowne Plaza is now civilly being prosecuted by the National Labor Relations Board's Buffalo office for alleged federal labor law violations, causing fear and intimidation among their workers.
On June 9, a contingency from unions and other supporters converged on Crowne Plaza to show their support for the hotel workers to be able to organize a union. We will continue until Crowne Plaza allows the workers to gain their rights.
Please go to the Rochester and Genesee Valley Area Labor Federation AFL-CIO computer site and sign the petition to support the Crowne Plaza hotel workers.
