THEATER: "The Water Engine"; "Take Me Out"; "Romeo & Juliet"

Published on Jul 11, 2007

The cool air of a movie theater sounds good to just about anyone in the middle of July, but maybe you're not up for another exploding Bruce Willis flick. Check out some of the exciting offerings from our local theater community instead.

Black Sheep Theatre Coalition's production of David Mamet's "The Water Engine" is a sinister thriller about the pursuit for the patent on a water-run engine. It's more relevant than it sounds, and features that trademark Mametian banter. "The Water Engine" continues through Saturday, July 14, at Rochester Contemporary, 137 East Avenue. $12-$15. 663-1938, www.blacksheeptheatre.org.

If ironic comedy is more up your alley, the Tony Award-winning "Take Me Out" will run at the Blackfriars Theatre July 14-July 29. Dealing with homosexuality and baseball, it covers a little bit of everything. Well, not everything - this one's got full male nudity. Blackfriars Theatre is located at 28 Lawn Street; tickets cost $23-$25. For a full schedule call 454-1260 or visit www.blackfriars.org.

If you don't mind the heat outside, take in "Romeo & Juliet," Rochester Community Players' annual Shakespeare in the Park production. The classic continues Wednesday, July 11, and Friday, July 13-Sunday, July 15, at the Highland Park Bowl. All shows at 8 p.m. Donation requested.
