CIVIC ACTION, 8/08-8/15

Published on Aug 08, 2007

This week's calls to citizenship include the following events and activities. (All are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.)

  • The proposed expanded service for Lift Line customers by the Rochester Genesee Regional Transit Authority is being described as an "empty offer" by members of Rochester ADAPT, an advocacy organization for people with disabilities. The current Lift Line service is available by appointment to customers three-quarters of a mile on either side of an existing RTS route. Customers who cannot drive can use the service for medical appointments, shopping, and other needs. The expanded service would include customers two-and-three-quarters of a mile on either side of an existing route, and the cost would increase to $6, plus the typical fare for one-way trips less than 20 miles, which is $2.50. A round trip fare for most customers would be about $17, a price too high for people living on social security or disability, says ADAPT spokesperson Chris Hilderbrant. ADAPT is holding a public meeting on Thursday, August 9, to discuss the proposed change. The meeting will be held at the Edgerton Recreation Center, 41 Backus Street, at 5 p.m.
  • The Penfield Town Board is holding a meeting on Tuesday, August 14, that will focus on issues and projects concerning the northeast area of Penfield. All residents and business owners are encouraged to attend the meeting, which will be held at the Roseland Fire Station, 1391 Salt Road, at 7 p.m.
  • The First Unitarian Church will hold a peace vigil on Tuesday, August 14, at 220 South Winton Road in front of the church. The event is sponsored by the First Unitarian Peace Advocates and will be held 4:30-6 p.m.
  • Dixon Schwabl is inviting WWII veterans, nurses and supportive civilian workers to speak about their war experience on Wednesday, August 15, and Thursday, August 16. The interviews will be videotaped and submitted to YouTube and The Library of Congress. All participants will receive a DVD compilation of the interviews. For information on how to participate call 749-3223 or email veterans@dixonschwabl.com.
  • The Literacy Volunteers of Rochester is holding a series of information sessions about becoming a literacy tutor for adults. To become a tutor, volunteers must attend an information session and a training workshop. Contact Shelley Alfieri at 473-3030.
