This week's calls to citizenship include the following events and activities. (All are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.)
  • The city and the Rochester school district will sponsor a candlelight vigil, a youth summit, lectures, and family entertainment as part of Violence Prevention Weekend, Friday, August 17, through Sunday, August 19. Dr. Kenneth Hardy, a Syracuse University professor and family therapist, and Kemba Smith, who has served time for drug-related crimes, will be the speakers. The events will be held at Wilson Magnet High School, 501 Genesee Street, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.; at Wilson Foundation Academy, 200 Genesee Street, on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and at the High Falls Festival Site, 4 Commercial Street, on Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. The full schedule's posted on the school district's website.
  • The Sustainability Party will be collecting signatures on Thursday, August 16, for a petition to put activist Andrew Stainton on the ballot in November for Monroe county executive. An information table will be set up at the South Wedge Farmers Market behind Boulder Coffee, 100 Alexander Street, from 4 to 8 p.m.
  • Members of MoveOn.org will sponsor simultaneous rallies on Thursday, August 16, where they will release a report that details the cost of the Iraq War to local districts in terms of lost funding for education, health care, and infrastructure. The eastside rally will be held at Kennedy Park on Main Street in Fairport across from Representative Randy Kuhl's office. The westside rally will be held in front of Representative Tom Reynold's office, 1577 West Ridge Road. Both will be at noon.
  • Representatives from Attorney General Andrew Cuomo's office will hold a community forum on Wednesday, August 22, to discuss discriminationin housing and employment, fair lending practices, and consumer rights. The forum will cover the state and federal laws that protect citizens from discrimination, and state representatives will answer questions. The event will be held at School of the Arts, 45 Prince Street, at 6 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
