ROCK: Kittie (8/18)

Published by Saby Reyes-Kulkarni on Aug 15, 2007

When Kittie first emerged in 1999, nu-metal had more than worn out its welcome but was still unavoidably popular. It seemed unlikely at the time that four teenaged girls from could give the metal world a slap in the face. But that's exactly what happened. Unfortunately, not enough people noticed. Because they were four teenaged girls with a cutesy bandname, it was all too easy to dismiss the group as the packaged gimmick of some industry mastermind.

The band's debut, "Spit," has aged well, but on subsequent records Kittie's nucleus of Mercedes and Morgan Lander has weathered numerous lineup changes and delved into more formulaic metal styles. Ironically, now that the band is older, wiser, and more experienced, it seems to be trying harder to find its identity than when it first made an ungodly, angst-filled adolescent racket. Still, frontwoman Morgan Lander deserves credit for putting a feminine face of rage, and she can growl like a motherfucker.

Kittie, It Dies Today, Silent Civilian, Bring Me The Horizon, and Blessed By A Broken Heart, and A12 Gauge Tragedy play Montage Music Hall, 50 Chestnut Street, on Saturday August 18, at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $15-$20. 232-1520, www.myspace.com/themontagemusichall.
