This week's calls to action include the following events and activities. (All are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.)

Anti-war vigils: Peace Advocates has scheduled Stand for Peace in a Time of War vigils. On Thursday, September 6: from 7:30 to 9 a.m.: at First Unitarian Church, 220 South Winton Road; from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at St. Luke and St. Simone Cyrene Episcopal Church, Fitzhugh and Broad Streets; and at the intersection of Park Avenue and Culver Road from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. On Tuesday, September 11, there will be a vigil at First Unitarian Church. Meeting the candidates: A Rochester School Board candidates night is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday, September 9, at First Unitarian Church, 220 South Winton Road, sponsored by the church's Social Justice Council. Peter Iglinski of WXXI will be the moderator. After brief presentations from the candidates, audience members will have a chance to ask questions. Information: 224-0319.

Tutors needed: Literacy Volunteers of Rochester has scheduled a preview session for people interested in becoming a tutor. The 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 11, session will be held at 249 Highland Avenue. After attending a preview, individuals can participate in training workshops. The organization needs tutors for adults who want to learn to read, write, or speak English. Teaching experience or knowledge of a foreign language is not needed to become a tutor.
