City officials turned out in force last week to announce the return of a supermarket to northwest Rochester. By early next year, the former Wegmans on Driving Park Avenue will house a Price Rite.
The store will create 100 jobs. Another perk: Wegmans had donated the site to the city, which sold it to developers for $425,000. The money will fund grants to help area businesses with exterior improvements.
And what about Wegmans' plan to expand its sole remaining city supermarket, the bustling East Avenue store? No new news. The company has acquired all but one of the properties on the block, says Wegmans spokesperson Jo Natale, but it has no timeline for proceeding.
Wegmans hasn't presented any plans to the city, says Economic Development Commissioner Carlos Carballada, and officials have had only general discussions with the company.
