It may take you a while to realize that Katamine is a noise act, because when acoustic guitarist/bandleader Assaf Tager plays by himself, the music just sort of gently hovers. At times, Katamine seems to fall closer to more straightforward strains of avant-folk or even singer/songwriter-based electronica. Nonetheless, Tager is intent on staking out his own territory somewhere between the acoustic guitar and noise. Heavily influenced by the more restrained work of Swans leader Michael Gira and Neurosis, Tager actually eschews traditional song structure altogether. That he does so in such an unassuming manner that you might not notice doesn't take any of the edge away from his creative purpose. Where experimental artists tend to try to blast your senses into submission with the force of their abstraction, Tager's finessed approach suggests subtle, previously untapped shades of possibility for what the noise genre can be. Two accompanying sidemen quietly "stomp, rattle, and bang" along.
