IRAQ: Area Representatives comment on the Petraeus report

Published by Mary Anna Towler on Sep 11, 2007

Area Republican members of Congress split in their reaction to the Petraeus report on Iraq.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, Tom Reynolds said he supports the Petraeus military goals but said "it is far time the Iraqi government becomes more than casual observers."

In his press release, Randy Kuhl praised Petraeus's report and said he is "in complete support of starting to bring our men and women home this month." (Petraeus had suggested that the drawdown might begin in December.) Kuhl said, however, that he is "discouraged by the advancements made in the areas of reconciliation and political progress."

"The results from the 18 benchmarks set forth by Congress will be released on Saturday, the 15th," Kuhl said, "and will be an important determinate of the progress in Iraq."

Jim Walsh broke from the president and said it's "time to start bringing our troops home." In his press release, Walsh, who recently visited Iraq, said he had noticed "little positive change" since a visit four years ago. "The Iraqi government is stumbling towards a national democracy," he said, "though a sense of urgency is lacking. The Iraqi military is mobilizing, though a willingness to lead is not evident."

"Iraq's stalled political progress will continue," said Walsh, "unless it is forced to take charge of its own destiny. The Iraqi military will not stand up until the US military physically begins to step down."

Democrat Louise Slaughter called the Petraeus report "the predictable cherry-picked information used to mask the reality of what is really happening in Iraq - something we are so used to hearing from this administration."

"I will continue to demand accountability from the administration and push for a prompt troop withdrawal," Slaughter said in a press release.
