MEDIA: There's more local programming

Published on Sep 18, 2007
I could have done without the pic of Frank De Blase having a poop, but your report on local DJs spotlighting local music was pretty good. I'm puzzled that you overlooked WRUR (88.5), WGMC (90.1), and WBER (90.5), all of which must be given credit for their fine local programming. Scott Regan's daily "Open Tunings" show on 88.5 is as good as anything done by homegrown FM radio, and the city is fortunate to have such a modest, knowing host. His sets show a touch for styles and eras, if you will, that reminds me of local radio in the '70s.

Rochester will always be conflicted about who's doing enough for music and infrastructure. There's no bottled water in the provinces.

The East Coast model for hip, smart radio will always be just down the road in Philly (WXPN).

Editor's note: The focus of the article - which did include a section on WBER - was on local programs that feature solely local music. While the other stations air programs that include local music, that's not the shows' sole content. We did omit, as a reader noted last week, WBEE's "Upstate Onstage," which airs Sundays from 9 to 10.
