ROCK: Alice Cooper (9/19)

Published by Frank De Blase on Sep 12, 2007

What's scarier? Leather pants and straitjackets? Or [shudder] golf pants? The things Alice Cooper does off stage scare me a lot more than his antics on stage. The scariest, most diabolical, most heinous being his love affair with --- gulp --- golf. It even dominates the title of his recently written his memoirs "Alice Cooper Golf Monster." Sure, Cooper, who promised "to drive a stake through the heart of the love generation back in the '60s, scared a lot of folks with his theatrics, but beneath the pageantry was some incredibly orchestrated music. His mixture heavy rock with experimentation (thanks to Zappa) with demonic icons made him rock's first prince of darkness. Some 30 years later, comparisons are made, but not lived up to...on stage or on the links.

Alice Cooper plays with Heaven and Hell (The Dio fronted version of Black Sabbath), Queensryche, Wednesday September 19, Darien Lake Performing Arts Center, 9993 Allegheny Road, 232-1900, 6:30 p.m., $20-$59.50
