The Genesee Valley Park Sports Complex (131 Elmwood Avenue) marks the changing of the seasons quite literally Friday, September 7, with the "Slip and Slide" event, taking place 7-11 p.m. Take a last lap in the park's Olympic-sized swimming pool, since the summer swim season ends at GVP Sunday, September 9. At the same time, strap on some skates and hit the ice rink one day prior to the official start of winter skating season. The evening also includes various games and door prizes. An admission charge of $4 for adults and $2 for kids 18 and under covers admission to both the pool and ice rink, locker use, and a free skate rental. For more information on Slip and Slide call 428-7888.
Speaking of skating, the GVP ice rink season officially starts on Saturday, September 8. Open skate for the season (through April) takes place for all ages Mondays-Fridays noon-1:15 p.m., Fridays 10:30 p.m.-midnight, and Sundays 2-3:15 p.m. Adult skate (18 and over) takes place Wednesdays 10:30-11:45 a.m. and Sundays 3:30-5 p.m. For other activities, including "Skate & Shoot" hockey practices or figure skating lessons, visit cityofrochester.gov or call 428-7889. A nominal fee applies to most ice rink events.
