Cake "B-Side and Rarities"

Upbeat Records

You've heard "Going the Distance" and "Short Skirt Long Jacket," but spin Cake's latest B-sides and rarities release, and you'll hear the band cover Black Sabbath, Buck Owens, and Barry White. On the surface, it seems like a stretch. But relax your ears and your assumptions, and the album starts to sound real straightforward, like a bunch of guys just goofing around with some songs they like. And that's what this is. Cake mixes genres and plays with blips and beeps and bouncy bass lines, all the while maintaining a signature sound that has as much to do with the vocals - usually delivered in a not-unpleasant monotone - as with that funky bass. Cake's sound is like its namesake: essentially familiar, but always fun.
