DEVELOPMENT: The neighborhood and the UR

Published on Jan 04, 2008

As a 40-year resident of the Plymouth-Exchange community, I was appalled by Nelson German's response to the November 28 article concerning the University of Rochester student apartments being constructed (The Mail, December 5). Yes, our neighborhood has its challenges, but what neighborhood in America doesn't? At least we recognize these challenges, are willing to address them head on, and try to make things better for all who chose to live in our community.

We embrace the students, extend our hands of friendship, invite them to break bread at our tables, and try to help get them through the first stages of homesickness. I can personally say I enjoyed vegetable gardening with many students in the area and sharing meals regularly during our Monday night porch "potluck" buffets.

Mighty funny: The developer, John Yurtchuk, didn't attempt to build a gated community on the other side of the Genesee River. I would have loved to see the reaction of the South East Area Coalition! And speaking of crime, as the coordinator for the Southwest Court Watch program, we are currently following a case in Supreme Court of a U of R student who had a very sophisticated marijuana-growing project on West Avenue.
