PUBLIC DEFENDER: Crowd awaits entry to tonight's meeting

A crowd of about 30 or more awaits entry to tonight's County Legislature meeting, where the Lej is expected to pick a public defender. Recent meetings about the public defender have dissolved into chaos, culminating in the arrest Saturday of State Assemblyman David Gantt and two local leaders in the African-American community. Tonight's meeting begins at 6 p.m., but the public is being kept in the lobby for an indeterminate amount of time. Stairways, doorways, and elevators are guarded by law enforcement. Officials will let the public upstairs to the fourth floor, where the meeting will take place, one elevator at a time.
