PUBLIC DEFENDER: Gantt, Scott hold press conference

The community members who packed two recent County Legislature meetings did nothing wrong, said Assemblyman David Gantt and community activist Ray Scott during an afternoon press conference. The public was just trying to voice its belief that a different process should have been used to select the public defender, Gantt and Scott said. The show of force at the meeting where the defender was chosen - by way of several armed sheriff's deputies - was an extension of institutional racism, Scott said. Protestors and community leaders have preached peaceful, non-violent protest, and there was no need for police suppression, Gantt said. "The way we're viewed as a people, when we congregate, that makes people nervous," Scott said.
