Nazareth President Daan Braveman, at a press conference last week, said work should begin shortly.
The Art Center's stage will be reconstructed from a rounded stage to a proscenium or "picture frame" stage, which improves the way dance productions, in particular, are viewed. The stage will also have a spring floor to help cushion dancers' movements, and a "fly system" will be added to allow technical crews to move large sets around quickly.
The Arts Center is home to the Rochester Children's Theatre and Rochester City Ballet. It had been talked about as a possible home for Garth Fagan Dance, but Garth Fagan has lobbied for a downtown site instead. Fagan contributed to Nazareth's stage redesign, Braveman said. And Fagan's troupe will give the opening performance in the renovated Arts Center in early 2009.
Braveman was asked how the 1,000-seat theater fits in with discussions of an arts center at the proposed Renaissance Square project downtown. He said the college has moved forward on the Arts Center renovations independent of what may happen with Ren Square.
Renovations, Braveman said, should be complete in the spring of 2009, in time for Nazareth's first Summer Dance Festival.
