Credit where it's due: this Chicago three-piece openly rips off Tool and Helmet and retains little (if any) of their substance or depth. Yet somehow it comes up with a catchy brew of heavy rock anyway. On its new album, "Vena Sera," the band revisits the same angst-ridden territory that it has admirably managed to sustain a career out of. Churning guitar riffs and cymbals blur into a familiar radio-compressed wash that's underpinned by driving rhythms. Yet, before you say "heard this all before," Chevelle has a dastardly talent for getting under your skin and pushing the "guilty pleasure" button in your brain.
