POP: Mike Doughty (3/13)

Published by Saby Reyes-Kulkarni on Mar 12, 2008
In retrospect, it might have been for the best that Mike Doughty's former Soul Coughing bandmates didn't (in his words) respect him as a musical leader. Though a person could say that his quirky vocals were Soul Coughing's main ingredient, you can also argue that his bandmates' bold experimentalism rescued Doughty from his own cloying, pseudo-Beatnik posturing and made him look like the mastermind behind one of the most engaging, unique sounds of the 90's. On his new solo album, "Golden Delicious," Doughty takes his knack for hooks and pens some bona-fide classics, suggesting that he might finally be achieving a balance between catchy and weird.
