PUNK: Sakes Alive (3/18)

Published by Saby Reyes-Kulkarni on Mar 12, 2008
Rochester four-piece Sakes Alive takes the angst we've become familiar with from successive waves of emo, hardcore, and post-hardcore, and places it back in its original punk context. Which is not to say that Sakes Alive is especially retro-minded or traditionalist. That would be too narrow for this band's vision, but its lack of pretense does set it head and shoulders apart from the pack. When frontman Chris Vadeviver sings, "There's an ever-increasing risk / that you might have to give a shit," for example, his dusty, no-frills indignation makes for a perfectly convincing delivery that would probably have sounded forced coming from anyone else.
