When we think of impressionist painters, most often names like Renoir, Monet, Degas, and van Gogh come to mind. This weekend the Memorial Art Gallery brings their American counterparts to light with "American Impressionism: Paintings from the Phillips Collection."
The exhibit kicks off with the Making Impressions Gala on Friday, April 11, beginning at 7 p.m. A champagne reception, dinner, music, auction, and exclusive viewing are included; tickets cost $150.
On Saturday, April 12, an exhibition preview party begins at 8 p.m. (6 p.m. for MAG patrons). The night includes music by dance band Brass Taxi, the jazz of the Westview Project, harpists Roxanne Ziegler and John Gasper, and dance demos by Sean and Susie Buck of the Rochester Ballroom Club. Munchies, coffee, desserts, and a cash bar are also included. Advance tickets ($17; free for members) are required for both events, so call 276-8903.
To round out the weekend, on Sunday, April 13, the first of many lectures regarding the exhibit is scheduled for 2 p.m. Susan Behrends Frank, assistant curator at The Phillips Collection, will present an illustrated lecture (free with gallery admission).
