CLASSES: Young Entrepreneurs Academy

Taking care of business

Published by Eric Rezsnyak on Apr 02, 2008

If your child negotiates for raises in his or her allowance, asked for Quicken for Christmas, or regularly advises you on the stock market, you might want to look into the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!).

In all seriousness, YEA! is a program for kids in grades 6-12 who are smart, responsible, and demonstrate an interest in business or the community. The 4-year-old program, which is based at the University of Rochester, teaches kids how to succeed in business while really trying.

Kids accepted into the program learn how to write business plans, pitch to investors, secure funding from YEA!'s "angel investors," and implement a company of their own design. At the end of the year-long program the kids present their services at a trade show open to the public, and report on their successes and failures.

The Young Entrepreneurs Academy is hosting an informational session Thursday, April 24, at 6 p.m. at SUNY Geneseo's Newton Hall. A second session will be held the same date and time, Thursday, April 24, at 6 p.m. at University of Rochester's Wilson Commons. For more information on the program call 275-6902 or visit rochester.edu/osp.
