INDIE: Tigercity w/ VHS or Beta (4/5)

Published by Saby Reyes-Kulkarni on Apr 02, 2008
Out of nowhere, it seems, indie rock bands began taking to disco beats as if stricken by a highly contagious plague. That's probably because disco beats are contagious, and because, well... disco and rock go together like peanut butter and chocolate. Unfortunately, this movement already seems doomed to be a flash in the pan. This show, however, assembles two highlight bands from this scene. Tigercity has the daring to mix Steely Dan's arrangement aesthetic with the delectable catchiness of Hall & Oates, while VHS or Beta really know how to make a song soar to ecstatic heights with melodies that hit the bullseye between verse and chorus. Both create their own vocabulary out of now-familiar elements, and hopefully both will stick to their individual guns and outlive the trend.
