LECTURE: "Jackson Health Resort's 1st 50 Years" (4/15)

Published by Dale Evans on Apr 09, 2008

There's a peculiar 1883 brick Victorian building in Dansville that has gone by many names: Breakout Creek, Dansville Water Cure, Our Home on the Hillside, Jackson Sanatorium, Jackson Health Resort, Physical Culture Hotel, and Bernarr Macfadden's Castle on the Hill, to be precise. From water cures to a "get away from it all" haven for the rich and famous, the house and property have been used in many ways over the years. It once was a hot spot on the lecture trail, hosting such notables as Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, and Clara Barton.

On Tuesday, April 15, beginning with dinner at 6:30 p.m., David Gilbert of the Dansville Area Historical Society will present the program "Jackson Heath Resort's First 50 Years." Originally presented in 1908 using magic lantern slides, the slides have now been digitally reproduced for easier viewing. The program at Springwater Town Hall, 8022 Main Street, Springwater, is free, but bring a dish to pass and your own tableware. Call 335-3121 to reserve a spot.
