METAL: Belladonna (4/5)

Published by Frank De Blase on Apr 02, 2008
Amongst his many metal credits, one of Joey Belladonna's biggest moments gets overlooked. At its peak, nobody played lightning-fast metal better than Anthrax. As the band's vocalist from 1985 to 1992, and again in 2005 and 2006, Belladonna could nail those operatic, multi-octave, canine-exclusive screams, no sweat. But he didn't lampoon. The band shredded and he wailed. But it was Anthrax's historic paring with Public Enemy on "Bring The Noise" that spawned (for better or for worse) rap metal bands like Korn and Limp Bizkit, and more importantly bought two powerful music genres representing two powerful - and somewhat polarized - cultures together. Belladonna's current Never Look Back Tour line-up includes former members of Rochester's Pitch Black. Man, the good metal never gets old, does it?
