POLITICS: Chili's Dunning to switch parties

Published by Christine Carrie Fien on Apr 03, 2008

Bad day for local Dems.

Chili Supervisor David Dunning, elected as a Democrat last fall, has announced that he is changing parties. Effective November 5, he will be a Republican.

"I am still the same person you have trusted with the leadership role in our community," writes Dunning. "I don't see this decision as a compromise in my values, rather support for my belief in the need fora unified leadership team."

The rest of Chili's town board is Republican, and Dunning said it would be difficult to campaign against people he has come to respect and trust. It could also potentially create gridlock and hard feelings in the town, he writes.

Dunning's defection reduces by one the number of Democratic supervisors in Monroe County. Of the 19 towns in Monroe County, four: Brighton, Irondequoit, Mendon, and Chili, are led by Democrats.
