POLITICS: Cuomo will investigate state police

Published on Apr 01, 2008

New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo says Governor David Paterson has asked him to conduct an investigation of the state police, presumably in relation to accusations that former Governor Eliot Spitzer used state police and police records to discredit State Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno. In a press release issued this afternoon by the attorney general's office, Cuomo says he will do as Paterson has asked. "I applaud Governor Paterson for his leadership and commitment to integrity in government and in the State Police specifically."

"Combining politics and police work is a toxic brew," says the press release. "Any questions about political interference within the State Police are a serious concern. Our investigation will determine whether or not this has occurred within the State Police, and if so to what extent."
