Geva Theatre's 2008-09 season, announced tonight, will include provocative, well-known works - "Frost/Nixon" and "Sweeney Todd" among them - and new works, on both the Main Stage and Nextstage.

The season on the Main Stage:

Jeffrey Hatcher's "Ella," which focuses on the career of Ella Fitzgerald;

Peter Morgan's "Frost/Nixon," on the historic interviews of the disgraced president;

A stage adaptation of the popular movie "A Christmas Story," which substitutes for Geva's traditional holiday show, "A Christmas Carol";

The premiere of a work by Dan O'Brien, commissioned by Geva, "The House in Hydesville," on the spiritualist Fox Sisters;

Steven Sondheim's "Sweeney Todd";

A George Feydeau farce, "The Ladies Man."

And "Fences," the next in Geva's August Wilson series.

Geva's Nextstage calendar includes works it is producing itself as well as performances staged by visiting theater groups, some local (continuing this year's "Rochester Theatre Fest) and some from out of town.

Geva's Nextstage productions: the world premiere of "Rooms," a musical by Paul Scott Goodman; "The Clean House" by hot new playwright Sarah Ruhl, and the east coast premiere of "Evie's Waltz," a challenging new work by former Rochester playwright Carter Lewis.

Nextstage will also host Geva's Comedy Improv, American Voices (readings of new works), Hibernatus Interruptus, and the second season of "The Hornet's Nest," readings of new works on contemporary ethical dilemmas.
