RECREATION: Sonnenberg & Genesee Country Village & Museum

The dicey weather of spring is revving up into full-fledged summer. And with the burst of blooms comes the openings of some seasonal spaces.

Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park opens on Saturday, May 10. The nine formal gardens - including a Japanese Garden replete with a tea house - the greenhouse conservatory, and the 1887 Queen Anne-style mansion will open at 9:30 a.m. The site will be open daily until 4:30 p.m., until hours are extended to 5:30 p.m. beginning on Memorial Day. Admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors, and $5 for students. Children 12 and under are free. Opening day includes a special Mother's Day Tea with sittings at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.; tickets cost $12-$20. Sonnenberg is located at 151 Charlotte Street in Canandaiqua. On the same Saturday, Genesee Country Village & Museum - the largest living-history museum in New York - begins its season. Located on 600 acres in Mumford, the museum hosts demonstrations, lectures, and hands-on opportunities throughout the season. There are also more than five miles of trails to explore, and a wildlife and sporting gallery to observe.

Initially open only on weekends 10 a.m.-5 p.m., beginning June 3 the museum adds Tuesdays through Fridays 10 a.m.-4 p.m. to its schedule. Day passes to the museum, gallery, and nature center cost $14 for adults, $11 for seniors and students, and $8 for youth. Children 3 and under are free.
