BEWARE!!!
Mamasan's food has always been really good. Although, I feel that her prices are just a little too high for the amount of food you get. (This seems to be a trend in Rochester at least---small portions, big prices.)
All in all, I like Mamasan's and thoroughly enjoy the large variety of dishes available at the restaurant. Very fresh flavors and ingredients.
What I don't like, and why I started this review with the word "BEWARE" is that you really need to watch your bill. I won't accuse anyone of anything, I can only relate my experience.....and that experience is that I have been overcharged on several occasions. And, this has unfortunately happened to friends of mine as well. Is this a trend, I wonder....does it happen to everyone, but most people don't notice or pay attention? And, recently, a friend of mine got takeout and paid by credit card. When she got home, she realized she had been overcharged. When she called to report this to Mamasan's, she was told that "the credit card companies do this, they add on extra charges." That is simply false. Credit card companies do not add on anything. Mamasans is the best pan-Asian restaurant in town, bar none. The food is always spectacular. Last night, I had the Vietnamese curry chicken (I wasn't even aware that Vietnamese cooking even extended to curry), and my companion ordered basil beef, and we split an order of fried rolls. All the food arrived hot and promptly, and at $11-$12 a serving, I don't think they were overpriced. Considering the quality of the food, I'd say it was worth every penny.
What did annoy me was the poor quality of the service. Yes, they took our orders and got the food there quickly, but really, do they have to hover over you waiting to snatch your plate the second you finish eating? Are they short of dishes? And can't the (non-asian) slackers waiting the tables at least TRY to dress well? We had this one server who was wearing jeans that were so distressed, they looked like trash.
While we were eating, a pair of young women were seated next to us, and I happened to overhear their conversation. "They don't have 'General Tso chicken?' one said to the other. Maybe that's why some people think Mamasan's is overpriced; ignorant suburbanites automatically think that asian food is just that fake Chinese stuff that dozens of take-out places in town dish out at $8/serving. This place is waaaay better.
