City Newspaper's Take Reviewed by James Leach
The Tap and Mallet, Rochester's first gastropub, offers a mix of pub classics and what can only be described as bistro or brasserie food -- steaks, chops, an occasional fish entree, and a round of nightly specials. The interaction between good beer and good food is what a gastropub is all about, and this holds true here. New Zealand greenlipped mussels are cooked in a mixture of wheat beer, chorizo, shallots, garlic, and parsley, and more classic British fare such as the pork and veal sausage --less dense and more meaty than other bangers -- has been specially developed by the folks at Tap and Mallet. More standard pub fare like spinach artichoke dip and Buffalo wings are also available. Desserts include cheesecake (topped with cherries and bright-blue pop rocks!) and a delicious bread pudding.

The reason I give Tap and Mallet a 4 is because I think their food menu has a bit of growing up to do. This 4 star rating should NOT be seen as a reflection on their beer selection, their staff, or the overall vibe of the lcoation. As I reflect on what makes "the tap" worth tappin into-- I think it's because you never know who you're going to see. Will you see your old college roommate or the friend you haven't seen in a million years? It seems that the lack of "hard" drinks and mainstream domestic beer creates a natural selection that weeds out those that you wouldn't want to see and thrives on a group that have the potential to be fast friends.
