"Project Runway": Even more like a car wreck

I've been joking all along that Season 5 of "Project Runway" has been like a car wreck, with its rushed production, crap challenges, and terrible casting. Last night's episode fit that analogy perfectly, as the challenge was to make outfits out of materials salvaged from cars -- "Runway" sponsor Saturn cars, of course.

I hated the challenge. I thought it was the most blatant example of ad cross-promotion since last year's Hershey's challenge, but at least there the range of "unconventional materials" was a lot wider. This time they were left with seat covers, seat belts, floor mats, and air filters. That was about it. And I also didn't think most of the designers were all that creative -- substitute seat belts for tablecloths and you basically had the first challenge all over again. Although the design work, on a whole, was a lot better. (You can check out the results by clicking here.)

Words cannot express how much I HATED Korto's look. It was well-executed, sure, but it was IDENTICAL to her outfit from the first challenge, and not that far off from what she did in the Lipstick Jungle challenge -- huge, voluminous African/Asian-inspired jacket. It also looked ridiculous on that tiny model. When they called her to the runway I had hoped she'd be in the bottom for sending the same design out three times, but I was wrong.

It's interesting; I liked Jerrel's the first time I saw it, but then at judging I couldn't stop looking at how poorly the bust was made. Either that model was imploding, or it severely flattened her breasts. It looked sickly. His concept, though, was interesting.

LeAnne was the clear winner to me. The shape of the skirt, the interesting use of seatbelts -- I desperately hope she can make it to Bryant Park. She's my only hope this season. I can't stand any of the designers, not one.

I actually really liked Terri's. It didn't look like car parts at all, just a sexy-ass outfit. It's the first thing she's made that I was totally ga-ga over.

Suede should have been in the bottom. What an embarrassing outfit that was.

That said, I don't know who I would have taken out of the bottom. Blayne's was a disaster, as usual. The boobs were NUTS. The mirrors were so fifth-grade craft project. The raggedy skirt boring. Santino complex. Stella's skirt looked great while coming down the runway initially, but close up it looked like it was falling apart. And that jacket had zero to do with the rest of the look. And it was constructed poorly. A mess.

Poor, hot Keith needed to go home. His design was dull, poorly made, and confusing (what the hell was going on with the netting in the back?), but worse than that, he was falling to pieces. I just don't think he's mentally strong enough for that kind of a competition. I've said all along that he's not as talented as he thinks he is, but winning that one challenge gave him more confidence than it should, and he became a real brat. He looked even hotter than normal while crying (I know that sounds wrong), and I'm glad he's been auffed. I just couldn't deal with his drama.

A memo to Bravo: Rachel Zoe is so over. She's so three years ago. I can't believe she's got her own show, and having her as a guest judge here seemed even more desperate somehow. Nobody cares about Rachel Zoe. Nobody. It was great seeing Laura. She did a good job, too. I guess Anne Slowey is no longer Nina's replacement, since she's got her own "Devil Wears Prada" show coming to CW, "Stylista." (Of course I will watch it. Slowey is a magnificent bitch.)
