Finally, a fun challenge: create a look for a drag queen. I thought the episode was really fun -- some great queens, especially Varla Jean Merman whose outfit by Joe won, and Hedda Lettuce. I've been clamoring for a "Next Top Drag Queen" show, and this is exactly why. (Logo is doing one with RuPaul next spring, but since it's Logo and, like, six episodes nobody will ever see it.) These gals who are guys were so goddamned funny. I was dismayed that the challenge was wasted on this bunch of designers, however, because as fun as a lot of the garments ended up being, imagine what could have happened with an actually talented group. Think of what seasons 4 or 2 could have done with this!
I liked Terri's concept a lot, but the execution left me cold. I feel that way about a lot of her work. The yellow dangling cords totally distracted, and the top of the kimono was a mess. I liked Korto's shoulder piece and the removable skirt, but the rest was pretty boring. I just think she could have done a lot more with it. I have decided that I do not like Joe -- he is a straight-up hater, as most of these folks are -- but his outfit was absolutely fantastic. And that queen had a bangin' ass. Right outfit on the right model. (BTW: Loved how those bitches worked that runway, like, a million times better than the regular models. That is how it's done, ladies!)
I also really liked LeAnne's skirt. She does really interesting work, and she's practically the only designer I can actually root for since they're all such catty bitches. Suede's wasn't nearly as hideous as it was looking early on, and I've noticed he's stopped referring to himself in third person (which is proof that it's an act). Jerrell's was a mess. He's incredibly uneven. Kenley's was pretty, but totally uncreative. You could buy exactly that at any Vegas showgirl shop. Blayne's was...Blayne. I was glad his wings didn't work. I hate him.
Poor Keith really got slammed this week, by both the judges and his colleagues. Those are some deep chugs of Haterade they be sippin'. Kenley, Miss Old Hollywood, certainly has no room to talk about him being a one-trick pony. Hopefully he'll rein it in a bit, but I've said repeatedly that Keith isn't as brilliant as he thinks he is. He seemed pretty broken by the whole judging experience this time. Maybe he'll get inspired to actually improve his mediocre work.
And then Daniel. Thank god he's gone. What an insufferable little shit that guy is. He couldn't be more defensive, or less talented. What was conceptual about that garment? What was flashy? It's like he just used the train his model was wearing when she walked in as a template, picked ugly fabric, and then made her boobs look even more fake than they are. Awful, awful, awful, and then he has the gall to get uppity about it during judging. He's a real piece of work. The fact that he and Week 2 boot Wesley are dating in real life makes me think poorer of the both of them.
Next week: Laura Bennett is back, and this time she's judging. It looks like it's the unconventional material challenge, which causes these hacky designers to lose their shit. I hope Laura tells them all that they suck.
