Welcome to Holland, Sheena! Now go home.
Sheena’s ouster last night wasn’t a surprise if you consider her performance so far. She’s a pretty girl, no doubt, but I don’t think she ever took a really great photo. Plenty of decent ones, but nothing spectacular, and now that we’re down to the F6, that’s not going to work. Her commercial last week was excellent, but you can’t win this show on the strength of one commercial alone. Ultimately I just don’t think she progressed as a model, at all. I’m thankful she was there to stir up shit with Elina, but really, she’s not a model. Maybe an actress. But she really does just ooze hooch. Even when she was walking out she couldn't help herself, employing the booty tootch. Oh, Sheena...
That leaves us with an all-white Final 5 for the first time ever. It’s kind of shocking since Tyra places a high value on diversity (and rightly so), but I think these are the five strongest girls in the competition, minus Lauren Brie, who totally got robbed. I think almost all of the remaining girls have a shot at winning, except for Sam (I like her, but she’s fading and has a terrible walk) and Marjorie (great model, lousy personality, no way she takes this). Elina’s got a tougher time since she’s been increasingly portrayed as the house bitch the second half of this season, but the girl’s face just screams model. That leaves Analeigh and McKey as our most likely candidates.
If you’d told me a month ago that Analeigh would be a contender for the win I’d have slapped you across your face and then laughed in it. She had “chaff” written all over her, a la Kari from Cycle 6 or Kyle from Cycle 5. Gorgeous girl – gorgeous! – but there’s nothing high fashion about her. And now I think she’s practically a lock for Final 3. And that’s…startling to me. The judges again raved about her photo this week, and while the body was fantastic, the face was…smooshed. Unattractive. Practically pugnacious. I just don’t get it, but I’m girding my loins for her increasing likelihood that she could win it all. Yikes.
I should say that this episode included one of the better fashion shoots in recent cycles. It was actually about clothes – gorgeous clothes that mixed old world styles with modern takes – and thus it made for some really great shots. McKey’s was sensational, Marjorie’s gorgeous, Elina’s quite good despite the stiff look on her face. For the second year in a row we’ve got a decent crop of girls (remember Cycle 9? Ugh…), and when they lay off all the bullshit concept shoots you can actually see real models coming into focus.
By the way, I love how Tyra has basically given up on trying to justify the overseas locations as fashion capitals. I’m sure there’s fashion in Amsterdam – we had the Red Light District fashion program featured in this episode, which was…interesting – but essentially she just said, “Hey, it’s Holland. It’s really pretty. Just enjoy it.” And I am. I feel like this cycle has picked up again after a couple off episodes, and I’m eager to see who takes it. (Go McKey! If for no other reason than labeling the Marj/Elina/Analeigh communal bathtub scene this episode as “a va-jay-jaying shaving party” that squigged her out. Ha!)
