I was told the results shows would only be a half-hour this year. I thought we had a deal, "Idol." You don't waste my time, I don't waste yours. But last night we got an hour full of filler, kicked off by a group number to "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz. Shudder.
Since I skipped most of last season I forgot about how awful the group numbers can be. They're so Up With People it makes me uncomfortable. However, I have to say, this group of 12 actually sounded a million times better than any previous group I've ever heard on this show. That's kind of funny, since so many of them sucked Tuesday night.
I'm not going to go into details about who got cut when, but what you need to know is: Alexis Grace took the top spot for the girls (which I was kind of surprised by, since Tatiana is apparently the Vote for the Worst choice this year), so she's through; Michael Sarver "just beat out" Anoop Desai by something like 20,000 votes, but they didn't say if that was for first place for the guys or second (I suspect the latter); and Danny Gokey made the cut. No duh.
I'm perfectly fine with all three in the Top 12. However, I hope Sarver doesn't take this as a pass to keep doing performances like he did Tuesday night. He must know that he didn't make the cut on vocals alone, as that performance was pretty underwhelming. He got through because he's a) hot and b) a good ol' Southern boy. He's just folks, and the people in the heartland must be eating him up right now. (Not to mention the homosexual bear community.) I just hope he gets his shit together by Top 12, or we're going to have a replay of my beloved Matthew Rogers from Season 3.
The other big news is that Tatiana was "sent home" by Seacrest. I really don't think we've seen the last of her yet. She could be a strong contender for a wild card due to not only her vocals - which really were good on Tuesday - but because she gets people talking, and the producers LOVE that. I was slightly disappointed that she didn't go full-on Montana Moorehead at the end of "Soapdish" when she didn't make the cut. I was expecting more/less from her.
Also still in the mix for wild cards are Annop and Ricky Braddy, at least in my opinion. None of the other girls have a shot (whatever good will Jackie Tohn had left after Tuesday's performance evaporated with her obnoxious antics last night), and I think Brent and Stephen Fowler are officially done in everybody's book.
Group 2 performs next week, and includes: Megan Corkrey, Kris Allen, Mishavonna Henson, Matt Breitzke, Allison Iraheta, Matt Giraud, Jasmine Murray, Kai Kalama, Jesse Langseth, Adam Lambert, Jeanine Vailes, and Nick Mitchell. Another competitive group for the guys (my gut tells me Giraud, Kalama, and Lambert are the front-runners here), and another shitstorm for the girls. NONE of those ladies impress me much. But at least this should prove to be the end of Nick fucking Mitchell.
Please, please, please never include a spoiler in a headline again.
