"American Idol" 2009, Results: My life won't suck without you

So we can all calm down: the twist is not that the judges will be choosing who goes home. The twist is that the judges have one free pass they can give to one contestant who they think got unfairly booted once in the season. I actually think it's a smart idea. Imagine if they'd had that back in Season 5. Chris Daughtry would have won that bitch instead of that lame-o Taylor Hicks. Ah, well. Perhaps we'll be in a similar situation this year.

I missed the first half hour due to technical difficulties, but it appears as though Jasmine got a mercy killing right off the bat. Based on last night's performances I don't think that's entirely fair. She did a serviceable job last night. Certainly there were worse performances. But let's be serious, here. She never stood a chance to win the competition. She never even stood a chance of making the Top 6. So I guess we can find the silver lining in all of this: I was totally right in my prediction that she would be the first to go. Sorry, Jasmine! Go be a teenager for a while!

As for our second elimination, it came down to Jorge and Anoop. Again, not a surprise. Anoop was terrible, and Jorge did the best he could with a cringe-inducing arrangement. And it was Jorge who got sent home. That's really too bad. He was by far the most talented of the three in the bottom, and I would argue a better singer than several of the safe contestants - Megan, Matt, possibly even Allison.

He was also prescient in his song choice. "The pain and heartache seem to follow me wherever I go." Yikes.

In other news, Kanye West performed, and...eh. I don't like his "808s and Heartbreaks" stuff. Kind of hilarious that he performed on a singing competition, but whatever. KELLY CLARKSON! I am so glad you're back, Kelly, and not doing that mopey "My December" stuff. I'm going to totally buy your new album this weekend, because I am just that gay. Was Kelly trying to tell Ryan she's never been in a serious relationship? That makes me sad. She didn't sound greaton "My Life Would Suck Without You" -- her voice sounded pretty shot actually -- but does it really matter? It's Kelly Clarkson. God bless.

P.S.: Doid anyone else find that Comcast commercial as soul-crushing as I did? I mean, even the people selling it seem dead inside. Why would I want to buy this service when they all seem so unhappy?

FYI: The "new rule" would NOT have saved Daughtry. It only applies up to the final 5. He came in 4th!

Excellent point, Anon. I missed that due to the technical issues that ate up the first half of last night's show, and I appreciate the clarification. I guess I was just caught up in the moment of wondering what could have been: a world in which Taylor Hicks did not become one of our American Idols.

Why does everything have to be in comparison to Taylor? Idol Season 5 will always be the best and Simon didn't even put Chris through, He heaps praises on Chris all the time and trashes Taylor every attempt he gets, why is he so threatened by him?

I have not watched much of AI since Taylor was there. Just isn't the same without him.
I care not who sold what, hes the best. Great voice, great entertainer.
New album, its very very good. His own label. A Broadway Star. And he is livin good. We should all be so talented.

I really grow tired of all the Taylor Hicks bashing. Hicks is still the most talented and original artist to win American Idol.

Chris Daughtry didn't win cause America didn't want him to win, they wanted Taylor! Best Entertainer to come out of Idol. Payola made for good sales for Daughtry and sabotage for Taylor. Taylor is doing just fine without TPTB from Idol and media who have never seen him in concert or the reception he's getting from touring production of Grease.

Why the bashing still of Taylor? Season 5 is over and done with. No other season of AI will ever come close to it. And Daughtry.....so over him. He came in 4th people! Not second, not third. Fourth. Bitch at the voters who didn't vote him through, not Taylor who won.
