The big finish. In the audience: Kimberly Locke. Joely Fisher. Janice Dickinson with, I think, Anna Nicole Smith's baby daddy. Oh, Janice. Ryan said that 624,000,000 votes were cast over the season, with 100,000,000 last night alone. That's a lot of votes for the lowest-rated final sing-off in the show's history. Insanity. Going into the show Dial Idol predicted that it was too close to call, but they were giving Kris a 1.1 percent edge over Adam. On the other side, internet search requests were way in Adam's favor, and apparently that's been true for every winner on the show ever. So it was a tight race, which always makes for the most interesting finales. (Remember Fantasia vs. Diana DeGarmo? Who didn't think Fantasia had it in the bag? I bet even Diana had resigned herself to it by Top 4.)
The Top 13 came out singing Pink's "So What." The white outfits did nothing for Michael Sarver's figure. The Up With People-style group numbers are the worst part of this show, and I cringed toward the beginning. But somehow I thought it turned out OK in the end. Scott was really into it! Allison was great; god, I missed that woman. Megan clearly had no idea what was going on with the choreography. Jasmine Murray showcased why she was the first to go in a truly gruesome solo.
Then last year's champ, David Cook, came out for his pass-the-torch number. David's brother just died, so I can't talk any shit about the guy (but I will say I'm not a fan of the song). I quit watching his season - the first time I skipped out on the show since Season 3, mostly because I didn't like any of the contestants as people, much less singers. But David is clearly a talented guy and should have a great career ahead of him. He's certainly one of the more legitimate musicians to take the title. I just hope he gets some better songs on his next disc, because most of the cuts off his current one left me cold.
Ugh, the Golden Idol Awards. In other words, the parade of assholes who embarrassed themselves in the beginning of the season. I don't even remember half of these losers, and I watched every fucking minute of this season. Didn't we make enough fun of the mentally deficient back in January?
Of course Norman Gentle/Nick Mitchell was a shoe-in for the Outstanding Male award. I knew we'd see this sack of useless flesh tonight. Nick called out his comedy heroes, like Steve Martin, Martin Short, Whoopie Goldberg. I'm sure they really appreciated those props. Then he ripped off his sweats and did his stupid Norman bit. Where are the snipers when you really need them?
Actually talented people: duet between Lil Rounds and Queen Latifah. Lil would get my award for Biggest Disappointment of the Season. She was so amazing in semi-finals and then she just never got it back. The judges' bullshit critique didn't help, but I think she just lost the plot. Her performance with Latifah was a perfect example of what I'm talking about. Lil looked uncomfortable and the voice didn't kick in until near the end of the song. (Latifah sounded terrible too, though, and should fire her stylist.) Liked the song, loved the back-up dancers. They should have those on the stage in every performance every week, like on "Any Dream Will Do."
Anoop Desai came out singing "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz, along with Alexis Grace (remember her? She sounded awful) AND Jason Mraz. I felt Anoop rushed the intro. I also questioned his ill-considered facial hair. Jason sounded amazing (his first album, by the way, is one of the best debuts I've ever listened to). I think they did that number as a group sing earlier in the season, didn't they?
Kris Allen with Keith Urban, "Kiss a Girl." Kris sounded fantastic; the people who dismiss him as being a cute guy who appeals to "teeny boppers' (whatever that even means anymore) are willfully ignoring his huge talent as a singer and musician. I mean, this isn't Blake Lewis or Justin Guarini we're talking about here, people. It's not just good looks and a passable voice that got him here. I would argue that Kris outsang Keith on parts of the song. It was a perfect song choice for him, and a great performance.
The gals of Season 8 then tarted themselves up to sing Fergie's "Glamorous." Holy cats was Megan awful. It really was a shameful crop of women that made up the season. Allison really was their only hope. Fergie herself then came out to sing that terrible "Big Girls Don't Cry" song. That transitioned to the Black Eyed Peas proper coming out to perform "Boom Boom Pow." I always find it hilarious that one of the lyrics goes "I'm so 2008, you're so 2000 and late." Um, isn't it late to be 2008 for a song that came out in 2009? Even better: in the middle of the song the camera panned to an "American Idol" symbol on the floor and the sound dropped out for like 30 seconds. An offensive line being censored? Or a colossal screw up? You be the judge. Will-I-am rapped the shit out of the end of that song. I wanted more from the backup dancers in the full-body suits in the crazy patterns.
More of the Asshole Awards. Best Attitude. Fucking Bikini Girl. God, how I hated her. I know this may shock you, but Bikini Girl got her boobs done, and did everything possible to shove them in America's face. Classy dame. I think this may be the closest "Idol" has come to a porno, or at least the sex trade. And there have been actual hookers on this show. None of them were as gross as this girl. Then Kara came out and sang the shit out of "Vision of Love" and showed her skanky ass how it is done. LOVED IT! Kara is amazing. At the end she ripped open her dress to reveal a bikini. And I would like to say, she's got a better body than the tramp. The look of stank on Bikini Girl's face: priceless.
Allison Iraheta AND CYNDI LAUPER! "Time After Time!" This is what I always wanted! Allison gets my award for Biggest Surprise of the Season. I really thought she would be gone by Week 3, and she turned into such a great contestant. Likable, talented, consistent - I heart Allison. She and Cyndi sounded good on a stripped-down, acoustic version of one of the best songs of the 80s, slipping into a really beautiful round section toward the end. It's been a big week for Cyndi. She was here AND the season finale of "30 Rock." Lovely lovely lovely.
Danny Gokey singing "Hello" by Lionel Richie. I love this song, I'm sorry. I know it's cheesy, but I will forever flash right back to that ridiculous video with the blind sculptress crafting this gigantic clay head of Lionel Richie, complete with jheri curl. Resplendent. And then Lionel came out! He has still got it going on. I've never heard the song they sang, but it was terrible - one of the lyrics was "You can just chill" and "I'll prepare your meals"! What the hell was that? Thankfully they segued into "All Night Long," Paula started dancing, and all was right with the world. Danny sounded good and worked out his white boy shuffle. I think third place was just right for him. A solid contestant, but he would have made for a boring finale opposite any of the other two.
Adam Lambert came out decked out in leather with metal wing-like shoulderpads. He looked like a contestant from the EuroVision song competition. And he decided to sing..."Beth." And then he brought in KISS. Paul Stanley is a very brave man to be rocking out shirtless when he's got to be pushing 60. They dueted on "Detroit Rock City" and then "Rock and Roll All Night." Adam fit in with the group absolutely seamlessly, and sounded better than I think he has all season. This was another really smart pairing, and unquestionably one of the best moments in "Idol" history.
Then Carlos Santa came out and played "Black Magic Woman" and was joined by...Matt Giraud. How does that make any sense? Then the rest of the Top 13 came out to sing up that Rob Thomas/Santana song I OD'd on back when it was released. Jorge totally oversang his solo, and I feel terrible for him. He got so screwed by this show, specifically whoever did his arrangement for Week 1. Heather Locklear sighting! I hate so much what she did to her lips. But if they ever cast a live-action "Duck Tales" movie she should be in luck.
And then in possibly the most random thing to ever happen in the history of the world, Michael Sarver and Megan Joy joined Steve Martin - as in comedy legend/writer Steve Martin - for a banjo-pickin' bluegrass number. But let me tell you this: Megan Joy actually sounded amazing. Seriously. I find that woman beyond annoying, but her voice was perfect for this kind of music. Sarver sounded really good too. Am I crazy, or was that kind of awesome? Oh, and everything is explained. Steve has a new record out, and it featured the song they performed, "Pretty Flowers." Jesus, Martin. Wasn't "Pink Panther 2" bad enough?
The boys came back in suits singing "If You Think I'm Sexy" with some really terrible choreography. I was kind of embarrassed for all of them. That of course led to Rod Stewart, who is looking OLD. But if I had embarrassing kids like his, I think that would age me too. Stewart launched into "Maggie May" and his voice sounded pretty shot. Worse, he brought the night's momentum to a screeching halt. And up until then I'd been having a surprisingly great time.
Final Asshole Award. Seriously, I don't remember half of these girls. How are they any worse than any of the other terrible auditioners? And, of course, Tatiana Nicole del Toro. OF. COURSE. So there's a hat trick for the three losers I knew we would see tonight. And then a totally staged bit she launched into "Saving All My Love For You." I was really hoping Whitney would come out. She and Tatiana could compare their notes on Actual! Crack! Rocks! (Points to the three people who get that reference, and I'm sorry for being indulgent for the rest of you.)
Adam and Kris sang "We Are the Champions" with what remains of Queen (the world is still poorer for having lost Freddie Mercury) and, I think, a gospel choir. It was big and bombastic and was supposed to be moving, but at that point, I was just so ready to be done with it all. My laptop was running out of battery and I wanted ice cream.
AND THEN KRIS WON! HOLY SHIT! Nobody saw that coming. Nobody! Let the housewives of America start bitching in 3...2...1
In all seriousness, I am genuinely surprised. I like Kris, and I even think he beat Adam on Tuesday. But in terms of a satisfying ending, I think Adam would have made more sense. The season has really been all about him, like it or not (and I kind of don't). Kris came into the Top 36 with ZERO pimping and he went on to win the thing. That's amazing. I can't think of the last time that happened, if ever, on this show. So kudos to Kris, although now he's stuck with that shitty "No Boundaries" song as his first single, and 19 Entertainment telling him what to do with his first disc. At least he sounded markedly better on his coronation single than he did Tuesday.
What a crazy finale! All in all it was one of the more entertaining "AI" finales I can remember. Thank y'all for reading this blog every week. It's been fun reading your comments. And now a plea: I know viewership drops off dramatically once "So You Think You Can Dance" starts up, as it will tomorrow night. But please give the show a chance. It is better than "Idol" in almost every single way, and I will be blogging the hell out of it. Won't you join me?

Well I hate to tell everyone "I told you so," but I told you so. The Kris win wasn't a surprise to me really. I just felt it in my bones.
I will miss making fun of Adam every week. He is up there with Project Runway's Kenley Collins as people I can't stomach.
Well, on to "So you think you can dance?" See y'all there.

GLORY FOR HIM ADAM WILL CONTINUE TO ROCK THE WORLD AND BE REMEMBERED KRIS WILL FADE AWAY INTO THE FAR DISTANCE. ROCK THE WORLD ADAM...........YOU ARE THE WORLD IDOL KRIS IS NOTHING
Bob said on May. 20, 2009 at 10:27pm
Adam shouldn't have won. He was ridiculous.
Barb Crowley said on May. 20, 2009 at 10:32pm
This is such a joke, Adam is by far the best singer American Idol has ever seen. Chris only won because of the "Teeny Bopper" voters. What is this show about anyway, the best talent or the cutest????? I know that Adam will far outshine the be- bop music of Chris and look forward to hearing his future endeavors.
Robert Hiller said on May. 20, 2009 at 10:34pm
When they start making records, does anyone out there really think that Kris will outsell Adam. I'm 69 years old, retired steelworker. I love all kinds of music, but only certain singers in the country genre. I'm mostly a Jazz fan, but I had already bought, Mad World, If I can't have you, and tracks of my tears and will probably buy more of Adams. I've never done anything like that before! I didn't even consider buying any of Kris's songs. I think it should have been Adam, Danny, And the girl before Kris.
Well, time will tell who the "real" star will be!
Bob said on May. 20, 2009 at 10:36pm
You are forgetting one thing Barb...Kris is talented too.
vroooom said on May. 20, 2009 at 10:37pm
Yet another reason to believe that real talent, like Adam Lambert, goes unrecognized as the winning talent it is. Sad barometer for the measurement of pop culture trends.
Eric said on May. 20, 2009 at 10:37pm
Barb, I actually addressed this in the blog, because I knew it was coming: to chalk Kris's win up to the "teeny bopper vote" (which is seriously a completely meaningless term) is to dismiss a legitimately talented human being. I can understand why people love Adam, and I appreciate how passionate they have become about him. I know a lot of people will be upset about the finish, and rightfully so. But I personally don't think it's fair to write Kris off as just a pretty face. He can sing, he play, he can interpret music. He may not be the Idol many people wanted, but that hardly means he's devoid of talent.
Linda Buschur said on May. 20, 2009 at 10:37pm
I'm a 60 yr old gramma and have been watching American Idol for several years. I truly think America voted wrong.........Adam has so much talent and his singing & talent is way out of the league of all of the other contestants - including Kris. America needs to get out of their box, the ho hum....boy next door style guy will not make it. Adam Lambert can sing anything - - rock to soft and slow-just throw it at him, he'll sing and sing it excellent. He has a gift and I know he will go far in the entertainment/singing world.. He also has a sweet personality and a beautiful smile. I will be looking for his CD's....

I wasn't one bit surprised that Kris won. There is no doubt that Adam can sing, but his style just doesn't appeal to the masses. Kris' does. I liked Adam, but I wouldn't buy his album. I loved Kris and I would definitely buy his.
daisy said on May. 20, 2009 at 10:45pm
kris can't even reach the high note for the last song last night! it was like a different song when adam sang it....kris is good for singing in bars but adam is ready for the world stage. anyway, in all AI tradition, the better singers always come in second....just watch and see who will have more albums and concert tickets sold, move aside kris...
Linda Buschur said on May. 20, 2009 at 10:47pm
Yes - I voted last night many times for Adam Lambert
kirsten from asia said on May. 20, 2009 at 10:48pm
am speechless how such a great country get that SOOO wrong? Kris seems a top guy, and definitely talented but I will NOT remember him in a year and his style and voice is indistinguishable from the the pack. Adam is a true star, unique, fearless and iconic. Not winning is probably going to be right for him in the long run....
I will also look out for his CDs. You have no idea the huge fan base he has out in Asia. Go Adam, superstar..love you for ever.
Linda said on May. 20, 2009 at 10:48pm

Pearl said on May. 20, 2009 at 10:49pm
Justice! Seriously, Adam was way overrated folks. Slash told him not to "improvise so much in that higher register" (which translates into 'you screech too much'). Duuuuuuude! he worked with Axl Rose!! You know you're abusin' the scream when Slash tells you to back off it!!!!! Good for Kris!! Not my style of music, but I think he's a real musician.

I actually started out a big Adam fan. But I really got sick of the screeching after awhile. He just didn't need to do that so much. I love almost all types of music, especially Rock, but I don't really buy him as a Rocker. He is better suited to Broadway. Now I would pay to see him there/

so very ,very talented as a singer, entertainer. showman!! He's got class ;and so does Kris Allen /and Kris has a lot of talent, as well! He needs to work on his
CONFIDENCE! He's very modest & sweet & adorable. Well, that's where he'll probably be helped a great deal by American Idol, (I'll miss watching both of them
esp ADAM because Adam always leaves you wanting more, more more !!!
Whatever Adam does next....I want to see it (Dancing with the Stars?!!)
Whatever!! The Kat

All I can say is Wow. I was surprised that Kris took out Allyson and Danny, but to become the American Idol, Wow! I think time will show us that Kris would have been better off coming in second, remember Clay Akin, how about Cris Daughtry, and then there's Kathryn McPhee the losers were the winners. As I understand it Adam will be less restricted and beholding to American Idol to do his thing, I can visualize a cartoon with Adam having a long line of recording producers waiting to talk to him and Kris sitting there with Simon and Simon having a look, wishing he could be in that line of Adams. I too wonder if Simon might call ti quits. Nothing against Kris in his own way he is good he just wasn't good enough to be the American Idol This year, its ashamed I wonder how it will impact another season, I suspect the credibility of this show just fell off a cliff.
Helen said on May. 20, 2009 at 11:50pm
After watching the finale with my husband I turned to my hubby and said "I can't believe Chris won", my husband replied "Who is Chris?"... ha.... That is right ... !
I don't think I am as forgetful as my hubby but I don't think I will remember Chris tomorrow.
and yes Samstine is right - Simon was shocked...
I voted last night. I called all three lines for Adam for 3 hours and all three lines were busy. I got through close to 12. I still don't understand - who voted for Chris...
Let me put it this way - if Chris were in the last finale 2008 with David and David we wouldn't even know who Chris is. The big deal breaker with Adam was that Adam is unique and passionate and I believe some people get confused and intimidated by his looks. But America -Simon says - IDOL IS A SINGING COMPETITION, not Miss USA.
Eric, by the way an awesome blog article - funny and straight to the point. Special note to Robert even though I am 29 and we are 40 years apart we have identical taste - when I read your response it was like reading my thoughts on the paper- couldn't agree more that Adam will be a star and he will win some real awards and he will bring the Rock back. I truly believe this finale might actually do him a favor with long desired publicity!!!!
Borajerz said on May. 20, 2009 at 11:57pm
Lets face it friends, if the two of them could be judged solely on Singing Ability, Originality, The gift to make a song THEIR OWN..., voice range.... we all know who would be the winner. Unfortunately America judged it solely on "PERCEPTION".... and what if he is gay?... it's just disappointing that he outperformed and was on a totally different level than Kris... but many of us are very biased. Adam rocks, period. I'm sorry but I saw absolutely no originality by Kris. The only song I liked that he sang was an identical replica with zero originality.... Kara's song was a total piece of junk, Adam still made it good, Kris failed....
Lisa said on May. 21, 2009 at 12:08am
I just have to correct the stupid comment abut the black eyed peas song. DUH...the lyrics say "I'm so 3008(not 2008), you so 200 and late"....so it makes perfect sense.
Lisa said on May. 21, 2009 at 12:14am
AGH!!! are you all forgetting that Chris Daughtry was in the top 3, and is waaaaaaaaaaaay more successful than the actual winner was that year? Who was that anyway??? Oh yeah...Taylor Hicks. gimme a break. Anyway....I think Adam is great....but yells too much and goes over the top. Kris is VERY talented all around and deserved to win too. Adam will be successful anyway.....so it doesn't matter if he won. This gives Kris a chance to shine...and he's more marketable as the Idol. Adam will be in a band or something....you'll see. It'll all work out fine!! :) I just can't believe all the HUGE stars that were on the how. IDOL IS HUGE !!!!! I mean, come on.......QUEEN??? KISS??? ROD STEWART?? CINDY LAUPER?? Black Eyed Peas? CARLOS SANTANA????!!! OMG!!!! I was in tears from excitement!!!! LOVED IT!!! Best FINALE EVER!!!

I love this show - America has the voice in picking who they think is the best.
Way to go Kris - Can't wait to hear your first album.
Eric said on May. 21, 2009 at 12:25am
Lisa: Thanks for the clarification on the BEP song. I can't find a solid source for it online -- I see it both 2008 and 3008 depending on the lyric sites I visit -- and the song itself has an electronic distortion thrown in right when Fergie says that word, so it's difficult to tell definitively. You could very well be right. It would make a hell of a lot more sense, wouldn't it?
Also, a correction on your comment: Chris Daughtry actually came in fourth in Season 5. The Top 3 was Taylor, Kat McPhee, and Elliott Yamin. But your point is a good one. Just because someone doesn't win hardly means they're doomed to failure in the music biz. (And just because they DO win doesn't mean they'll succeed *cough*Taylor*cough*) I'll admit something really embarrassing: I listened to Kellie Pickler's whole second album last weekend, and I think it's awesome, with some killer singles. And she came in, what, sixth that year? Jennifer Hudson came in seventh in S3, and she's just fine. So I'm sure Adam will do well regardless, especially given his very vocal fans (as evidenced in this thread).
Lisa said on May. 21, 2009 at 12:25am
Adam reminds me of some crazy Vegas lounge act. He was really different than anything American Idol has seen. Kris is solid and normal. They are two very different singers. America voted, it was close. Simon looked angry about the result but the bottom line is they both can sing, they both will record and someone had to lose.

Wow!! What a huge disappointment that Adam didn't win. I am 53 and my mom is 75, and we both thought Adam won the competition, hands down. He was the "total package" and we will NEVER forget who he is and what he does with his, surely, stellar future.
Sure, Chris is cute, but I can honestly say that I will not remember him or anything he does with his music. Adam had worldwide appeal; no, he was not cute and shy, but he was very humble about the whole thing, and I am certain we will be hearing more about him in the near and far future!
Yes, Simon looked disgusted, and I can't say as I blame him. He was the one who said that Adam was a world-wide star, and he was SO correct. Like many of you, I fear that Simon will just pack it in and go about his business in London. God knows, he does not need American Idol to sustain him. Susan Boyle, anyone?
My son and I voted for Adam, last night, for four solid hours, so we did our part. I was really hoping that the teeny boppers would have to go to bed early, thus giving Adam an edge on the voting. I can see that I was wrong . . . . .
Come on America!! Wake up!! WHY do you insist on taking the soft, easy way out of a program? Adam has fire, sex-appeal (whether gay or not, I do not care!), range, talent and showmanship that Chris fans could only wish for.
Adam, you are the SUPERSTAR, and I am eagerly waiting for more of you to come!! I will buy your first record!! ADAM, you absolutely rock!! AND, your version of soft rock, such as Mad World, was haunting and beautiful. WE LOVE YOU, ADAM!!

I live in Australia and have been watching the current season of American Idol. I reacted with shock when the winner was announced. Sorry to say this, but America, you got it VERY wrong with your choice of winner. Kris is a nice guy with a nice voice, but there is nothing unique or remarkable about him. Adam Lambert is an outstanding talent, with a style that is different from any other performer. I get the impression that lots of Americans voted for Kris because he is a conservative Mr Nice Guy and has a squeaky-clean image, even though he has a limited vocal range and is not as versatile a singer as Adam. The voting public preferred this type of person rather than the flamboyant, daring and unique talent with an amazing vocal range that is Adam, ie the winner was chosen by the public for the wrong reasons. Adam is the type of artist that will leave his mark on the entertainment world because he is so different from the norm - and America, it's sad that you were not brave enough to vote him in as the winner because he has so much to offer to the entertainment industry. I feel that we will be watching and listening to Adam Lambert and hearing about his concerts and albums long after Kris has faded into oblivion.

1st, yes I voted. I almost decided not to but when Kris sang "No Boundaries", that made up my mind. When Adam sang it, I was thinking, "If Kris won then he will be forced to release that song". It was the worst song that Adam had sung all season. But then Kris actually interpreted it after Adam had just sang it. It still isn't much of a song but Kris gave it life. I like singers that can interpret a song and Kris is much better than Adam doing it. Kris doesn't have the range of Adam but there is more to singing a song than just hitting the notes. I'm not sure I could listen to a full cd by Adam until he sings like he feels the music (and the words).

So many disappointed people. I hope you all will reconsider and watch Idol next season. It's great entertainment, that's why we tune in week after week. It's like the super bowl or any other competition, someone wins and someone loses. Those of us that like Kris will be able to buy his music and likewise for Adam. Really it's us as fans that make an artist successful. If they sell CD's they live on if they don't they fade into the woodwork like many have done in the past. So if you're guy didn't win then buy his music and make him a winner.

Love you Adam!! Sorry you lost, but the blue states won the election, so guess we can't have everything! You are the true star and talent always wins out in the end! From a 60 year old fan!

Adam will be much more successful than Kris could ever hope to be. Talent is talent and Adam has it.
MERRILY said on May. 21, 2009 at 1:26am
I am a firm believer that the reason Kris won is that he appeals to a younger demographic who have the energy to vote for a solid 4 hours under the covers in their beds. Kris is a sweet musician and he really needed this win more than Adam did. It's ok that he won. I believe, however, that Adam should have. There has never been such an accomplished vocalist or showman or anyone for that matter, that has the versatility that Adam does. When he's on stage, all your attention is on him and he doesn't disappoint. He's going to write his own ticket and it's going to be exciting to see where he goes with his choices.
Yes. There was one other time with a big upset in this contest. Clay Aiken should have beat out Ruben Studdard.
As for Dancing w.t.Stars. The reason Gilles lost was because of Cheryl. He lost 2 points from the judges because of her choreography, which count as 50% of their final total. I love Cheryl, but there is no question that she blew it for him with the Flashdance 'spoof' dance.......it was fun and well done, but it didn't allow him to actually dance that much. I hope we hear from her regarding her big boo boo.

Kris is "cute", Adam is "BEAUTIFUL". Same degree of comparison is applicable to their talent. My 82 year old (Christian) mother and I don't know how we will survive now without the many nights of reading blogs about Adam and listening to his songs. We love Adam--his personal life-choices make no difference to us and have no place in a singing competition. His laugh always makes me happy. His dedication to his craft has been an inspiration to me. I'm 62 years old, retired, and have had a 30 year career that I loved. I had been depressed for about a year. Now, thanks to Adam, I feel alive again and have been inspired to pursue other things that I've long wanted to do. ADAM, YOU ROCK! We will be following your career and enjoying your music. Good luck to Kris too, by the way!
nancy goodell said on May. 21, 2009 at 1:37am
that is total bull. the show was great until that moment when the runt won over the tweens and jammed the vote. I will never go see Kris Allen sing live. I will travel to see Adam. ADAM LAMBERT is pure joy and talent. Kris, another sheepish white guy in a gap ad.
If you voted for Kris Allen, find a sky skraper and swan dive off of it. said on May. 21, 2009 at 2:17am
I'm never watching this show again. This just proved that American Idol is not about singing, it's about popularity. All the teeny bopper preps voted for Kris based on thinking he is "cute". Clearly, the fact that Adam is vocally superior by a clear mile, has his own style and originality, (unlike Kris, who wears a plain t-shirt and blue jeans on the show week after week)and is a much more seasoned and entertaining performer did not matter one bit. American Idol is a joke. But, the reason Adam will go further than Kris, in the same way Chris Daughtry has been more successful than past Idol winners, is because the people that voted for Adam did so because they recognize true talent and support musicians that they like. All these teeny boppers don't give a crap what Kris Allen sounds like, they just care about what he looks like. And I guarentee you 99% of the idiots that voted for Kris won't buy his album, because they simply don't care whether or not he can sing. Adam Lambert wins.
michael wicks said on May. 21, 2009 at 2:45am
I will never watch american idol again. Because they need to give the judges 51% of the vote. This is a talent show not a popularity contest. Executives you need to look at how you run this show. Big dissapointment!!!!!!!!!!!!!
charlie said on May. 21, 2009 at 2:52am
One of the biggest upsets on American Idol. Adam Lambert has the whole package. He has an amazing range of vocals along with an unfogettable stage presence. Kris Allen is just another wannabe Justin Timberlake. He doesn't have the range that Adam does. I was completely disappointed. American got it all wrong. Adam Lambert should have won by a landslide.

Thanks for the blow by blow of tonight's show; I forgot to record. I REALLY wanted Kris to win and voted accordingly [enthusiastically, hundreds of times]. I've loved Adam all season, but I got mad at the judges who were so blatantly biased. I felt they were really unfair to Kris. He obviously out-performed Adam on the "anthem" by singing it well, rather than just screeching it, yet Kara didn't even compliment him, saying that it was too high for him. duh. Why didn't she write it in a range he could sing comfortably? It could have been fixed for Adam if he won. She also tried to set him up with a bad song choice...That made me mad, so I made sure to vote, vote, vote. Apparently, I helped Kris, who won by a tiny margin. Will we ever know the actual vote count?? I was glued to dialidol.com -- 1.1%. WOW! I love the finale!!
Bob said on May. 21, 2009 at 7:23am
Where was all this Adam support two days ago? It's obvious he has hardcore fans, so why didn't they vote hundreds of times like those in the Kris camp? They obviously didn't want it as badly. Maybe next year they will become active participants instead of closing their eyes and hoping for the best.
Rick said on May. 21, 2009 at 7:32am
Wow, I can't believe that result, although I tipped it. I'm in Australia and always expect the US to ultimately choose vanilla when it comes down to it. Well actually, I guess vanilla came second last year but as an Aussie, I was always going for Michael Johns and that is a whole other upset story.
People will talk about Kris being more popular and based on phone votes, that is true. It might even be relevant if each person could only vote once, but the teenagers and home towners can waste all of their phone credit voting and there is no way of knowing how it translates to actual physical record buying members of the public.
Kris will have a following for sure and he may even have a string of Rob Thomas type hits, but he can't rock out and can't hit the high notes so his niche is limited. Adam on the other hand has worldwide appeal and remember that other countries could not vote. We just enjoyed a season that was all about Adam every single week and watched and hoped that America would reward the standout performer of the series. Disappointing guys and girls (mostly girls).
I suspect Idol would have preferred Adam's version of the new song, although I am very pleased for Adam he won't have to be associated with such tripe. Major studio work on Kris's version would have already been done but he'd be smart not to do it live again. Just not his style.
I also suspect Idol would have wanted to be associated with the singer that looks like they could be absolutely anything, iconic as Paula stated. To get a world recognised singer from the show would have given them a huge credibility boost.
One final observation, well two actually. 1. Thanks Kara for that imagery, very appreciative. 2. I can't imagine any other performer in the history of Idol that can slip into the spectacle that is KISS and do it justice .... I'd keep the recording just for that bit, if I wasn't so disappointed about yet another favourite missing out to a sham of a popular vote at the end of it.
Bernie said on May. 21, 2009 at 7:36am
Wow, there are so many posts I have no idea where to start. I'll start off with I did not vote. Nor have I voted once this year, I never had a contestant who grabbed my interest enough. I'll just say I don't know how to feel about Adam losing, and it's not because I think he's better than Kris, I think they are both interesting, but the way the judges and the media kept giving Adam a bj every week the outcome was very surprising.
There's not much left to say, since this blogger does a good job of catching anything that needs to be said, in my humble opinion. Thank you Mr. Rezsnyak for a great Idol Blog year. I'm looking forward to reading it next time. I'm looking forward to new topics to discuss until then, such as "So you think you can dance" and "The Fashion Show". Until then? I'm just not buying it... goodbye darling.
Rick said on May. 21, 2009 at 7:40am
Marianne, are you really suggesting that Kara should have written a song to suit Kris? It hardly suited Adam's style either but he can sing anything so did a better job at it. Saying the song was too high for Kris was a kind way of saying, his pitch was awful but being the last night to vote, they didn't want to say anything bad. Trust me, they WERE being nice. They were not biased against Kris, he just never really tested himself for most of the season, thus when that final song came along, we got a taste of his limitations.
Oh and 1.1% of 100 million votes is 1.1 million. Apparently, you and a large city helped Kris.

I'm still in shock. I can't believe I lost my last dollar bet !! Not that I don't like Kris. Kris is a wonderful singer with good looks and pleasant personality BUT I must say that Adam's vocal range is beyond anyone's imagination. I still think Adam deserves to win , judging from talent.

Have been reading this blog since Cathy introduced it too me. Have always loved the comments. Great to see the increase in volume... too bad it took the finale to get everyone out... wait guess I can't complain, this is my first comment.
I feel pretty ambivilent about last night. Like most, I thought Adam would win. There is no question that he is talented and deserved to win. I believe he has the best chance of any previous Idol of making it really big, in whatever he wants to do. Not winning last night may actually work in his favour, as he will be able to chart his own course as soon as the tour is over. There is also no denying Chris' talent. I believe he won for two reasons. He came into this with great musicality, however not a whole lot of stage presence, so with every week, he gained more experience and comfort, and became a better performer. Unfortuantly I can't help but feel that the real reason why he won, is that the bible belt just is'nt ready yet to vote for a gay man. A change gonna come, just not yet! I don't think not winning will hurt Adam, his future is his for the making, I do think that Kris' win will open doors for him that he would never have even known were there. So maybe America did get it right. Thanks again for a great blog, looking forward to SYTYCD.

Bob-- regarding your 7:23 a.m. post--I just realized that in my post I had not mentioned my voting on Tuesday. This is the first time I have ever voted more than one time per night. I started voting as soon as the show was over. I kept up with my number of votes for the first 15 minutes. I had logged 75 votes by that time. I did continue to vote for the entire four hours--taking only five minute breaks here and there. I did the landliine, redial method. There were spaces that I was able to get thru for 20-30 calls. This really rattled me because I was thinking "where is everybody else" I loved the busy signals--thinking others were calling in. Then, sometimes, I would just get dead air, and I realized this is not a perfect system. All in all, my voting alone gave Adam probably 1200 or so votes from here in Mississipppi.

I AM SO GLAD THAT KRIS WON!!!! All of you who are crying over Adam not winning...GET OVER IT! Kris is just as talented as Adam. Kris's voice will sell more CD's and will sound great on the radio! Who doesn't understand that?
Adam is talented but he screams too much...he belongs in the theater or with a group like Kiss! Where he can scream his notes all he wants!
The judges were unfair to Kris…they kept saying Adam was basically the winner and favored Adam more than anyone! As far as Kris saying “he felt Adam deserved it”…I guess so, all the kid kept hearing from the judge’s wk after wk was “how great Adam was?” Not so true!!!!!
OH WELL! AMERICA SPOKE AND KRIS WON, BE HAPPY FOR HIM!!!
Helen said on May. 21, 2009 at 12:09pm
I believe it is a BAD voting system. while I was trying to call the lines which were busy, people (I am sure kids mostly) who have AT&T send unlimited text messages ....
how fair is that? In addition, most adults don't even know that they can vote more than once, not to mention that the tricks teenagers use to vote!
I don't agree with people calling more than once - obviously little sassy girls will be calling 20000 times and texting...
I do agree that judge's vote should be a part of the total score like on Dancing with the starts, otherwise judges on Idol are useless past the audition point.
At last, America is very traditional... if Europe had a chance to vote, Chris wouldn't even be in the picture. It shows to the world how far behind the artistry of this country is. And for those of you talking about Adam, I would like to hear Kris sing a KISS song just for the heck of it;)-
M.E. said on May. 21, 2009 at 12:21pm
Adam was robbed. This is not a popularity or pretty boy contest, it is a "SINGING" contest. You can express as many comments as you would like, bottom line -- Adam is the better singer and performer. The only reasons I can possibly give for his loss are, too many teeny boppers voting for pretty boy and too many homophobes voting against Adam. Also, I thought all four judges let Adam down and were far too easy on Kris this past Tuesday night. I am speaking specifically about the third song they each sang. It was obvious Adam did a much better job (even to the judges), yet the judges said, "Oh don't judge Kris by this one song, judge him by his entire performance on the show. " Yet Adam was judged by them only for that song and Kris should have been judged only by that song as well. These are the rules of the game or so I thought. America did not get it right!!!! Open up your ears and listen, they must be clogged up or the entire country is tone deaf. Another interesting aside I thought, did you notice the response from the lead singer of Queen after their song with both Adam and Kris singing? The lead singer barely gave Kris the time of day yet was complimenting Adam profusely. At least he knows good singing when he hears it. And my final comment, Adam does not need American Idol, he will be a huge star, look at Jennifer Hudson!!!!!!!!!
Ruthy said on May. 21, 2009 at 12:24pm
Why would Kris sing a kiss song? That is not his kind of music.Do you think Adam could sing a Keith Urban song?Maybe Ai fans got tired of the judges dissing Kris to whom has a totally different singing style.Adam can sing but Kris is a musician.Has any one actually (Adam) came out of the closet? Why does that have anything to do with this.Maybe more americans want easy listening music and not hard rock.

all you people saying that Adam was far more popular or should have won and that this is "all wrong' need to remember that American votes - so obviously Kris was more popular - if you are an adam fan you are obviously the minority, otherwise Adam WOULD have won - Adam is just too "out there" for me - voice or no voice - he could never be my IDOL. Who would want their kids looking up to him? I know this is supposed to be about singing, but it's also about who America looks up to - and I don't think anyone really looks up to Adam - and to Daisy who said Kris can't reach a high note - I'm sorry but I got tired of hearing Adam screaming and screeching - he sounds like a girl - I'll go for the more masculine cool guy kris anytime.

it is disappointing to hear so many people whine about adam not winning. and that it is because he is gay..
i didn't know he was gay...or even care if he is. ofcourse, i had my suspicions but that doesn't matter.
i personally really wanted kris to win. i tried to vote for him last night but was unsuccessful in getting through.
oh well, in the end it wasn't necessary. kris won.
i am glad he won.
i would think the more appropriate reason for kris winning over adam was simply he was better for american idol as the idol.
adam doesn't fit that mold. kris would be a marketing dream for them. and the right choice was made.
adam can go off and make his own way and be extremely successful. however, i would not be purchasing his albums. i would be way more inclined to listen to something by kris.
just my two cents....

I haven't seen the final as in U.K. The result on tv tommorow night and I am working so thought I would check out the result. All I can say is SHOCKING. How can an average person like kris win over potential worldwide star like Adam? I'm not a massive fan of Adam and personasly find him a tad annoying but I can see through my personal opinion and recognize his talent whereas kris can offer nothing we haven't already seen. Of I'm was allowed to vote adam would have won. My gf is going to be mad when she finds out, she has practically left me to camp on Adams lawn!!!

you guys can say, "kris only won because....blablalbalblabla...." all you want - you can say he only won because of the teeny boppers if that makes you feel better but really if EVERYONE really liked Adam that much then he wouldn't have lost. Besides, give kris credit for rising above everyone practically dooming him to failure - the judges and even the finale made it seem like Adam had already won. Everything was all about adam - even when all the contestants were singing together it seemed like Adam made himself the center of attention and trying to "out sing" everyone. Adam acted like he had it in the bag and that bothered me. I'm glad he was humbled.

Glad Kris won. Both were talented, but I got tired of Adam screaming EVERY WEEK. I dig Kris' cool voice, and his musicality. I mostly listen to music at work through my headphones and if I had to hear Adam all day, I would probably want to throw my computer out the window. That said, Adam will be very successful, and all of his fans who didn't vote can go buy his album.
As for all of the Euro's and Canadians and Aussie's out there saying America got it wrong, it is American idol, and I believe you have your own idol to watch (no offense, but it's annoying to read over and over that an opinion is WRONG). If thousands of "teeny-boppers" want to vote for Kris, then so be it. That's the way the show goes. I'm not 13 and I loved Kris, so maybe his fan base is bigger than the bible belt (which i think it is, otherwise Gokey would have been top 2).
I don't think Adam didn't win because he is gay either. I'd like to think people don't really care whether he is or isn't. It seems he just didn't have the type of fans who vote. It was an awesome finale nevertheless. 3008!

I saw the tidal wave turning toward Chris in the last few weeks. Unforunately, the internet is a wonderful tool, but it also can be a destructive tool when people use it to slander a person's credibility and reputation. Adam is musically gifted; and like many people have already noted, Adam always leaves you wanting to hear more from him. This should be a contest about talent; if it were truly that, Adam would be the winner. No one argues the point that Kris can sing. But truthfully, who is the more talented and gifted singer? That is the question that should be addressed. Anyone with any background in music knows that Adam's range and voice control rank among the most gifted in he world. He will be an ICON in the industry and become famous because of His Talent!!!!!! I did vote several times for him. Once again, I have nothing against Kris; I feel he will be forgotten in the future like many other idols who have won the title but do not have the most talent!!

but it should reflect the level of talent, and Adam was clearly the most talented contestant this year, whether you like him or not. Not only the most talented, but arguably the best singer...certainly way better than Kris

In my opinion, America got this one way wrong! Kris can definately sing, but he is no more distinctive than most artists today. I have a hard time recognizing who anyone is on the radio these days. And I don't buy many cds because there isn't too much talent out there anymore. Then comes along Adam Lambert. Extremely talented in every sense of the word...a brilliant musician, in my opinion. He has depth, is very creative, is very entertaining and can actually sing. I would pay money to see him and will definately buy his cd. From the beginning I thought the top 3 would be Adam, Danny and Allison. They were by far the best singers in the lot and will likely be more successful than Kris. Kris will fade quickly I think, as did Fantasia, Reuben and Taylor. Adam will be better off having come second, anyway. He will have much more creative control over his career and will be better for it. Just ask Dautry and Clay Aiken.

ADAM should have won, during the whole season he was consistent, great, inspiring, creative, intelligent, flashy and much more... Kris whas not of that....
so AMERICA was wrong... The only reason Kris won was because his entire damn state voted him him... every single person in Arkansas voted as many times as humanly possible.... ADAM will surpass Kris in his career, records sold, theatrical performances and just plain TALENT.... it is CLEAR... ADAM is a ROCK GOD and whatever else he tries to do... Kris will end up a nobody.... hahahahahahaha

Many thanks for a fantastic blog. Great comments people. And as always we have people divided. Look at the reality. Kris almost fell over when his name was announced and his comment re Adam summed everything up. The look on Simon's face said it all (although Simon has been stupidly saying it would be Adam all along.) From a talent perspective Adam wiped his a***e on everyone. No doubt. Simon knew that. What Simon failed to factor in was the voting American public. Living in Sydney/Oz I would have loved to have voted and had a say.
Well done Kris but you weren't the best in the season and you knew that. He's stuck with a sham song he can't sing so he's on the backfoot before he's even started. Adam I hope and pray will shine on the world stage. Kris is going to be lucky making a name for himself outside of Arkansas let alone America (okay a slight exageration.)

I am from Malaysia. America got it wrong BIG TIME! This is a singing competition. Adam should be the clear winner. Something is really wrong with AI voting system. This is making a real mockery out of AI. Kris is good, pleasant and likable. But clearly Adam is way better all round - he sings both rock and ballads superbly, has stage presence, confidence, versatility.

Well, Thox Ralte.....I hope heaven helps Kris sell his albums too. No offense but he's not much of a talent. Adam will be a legend, he's a true talent and Kris will just fade away.

Reading through the last several comments, I feel the need to restate one point and make another.
1) The fact that Kris won does not make him more popular, and it won't necessarily translate to record sales. If you vote for someone 1000 times, you are still one person not 1000. Of course you could go and buy 1000 copies of his album but somehow I doubt it. No, this is a system purely set up for what demographic has the fastest finger. The fact that Adam was the favourite counted against him as his fans may have thought he was a certainty.
2. The comment about it being American Idol and people from other countries have their own idol, completely misses the point.
How many American Idols have made it big on the international music scene? Adam has global appeal and these comments from other countries demonstrate that.
Sure, you can take credit for your idol coming from your country, but some acts get to the point where they belong to the world and influence music all over the world. It would have been nice to see that. That's okay though, if the feeling is that Adam isn't good enough to be America's Idol over Kris, I'd expect those people won't feel the need to claim him as their own when he does make it big in other countries.
Oh yes, one more .... of course Adam could have sang with Keith Urban, the guy is that versatile.

My biggest issue with this whole thing is not who won bot the people who say they are never watching Ai again! The show does not control the vote the American people do!
Ash said on May. 22, 2009 at 11:48am
I'm with Mo. So tired of Adam screaming every week. Everyone is acting like Kris had no talent - Kris had talent, it was just a different style. American simply liked Kris' style over the screaming screeching Adam. Just cuz Adam could scream louder didn't prove anything to me. Where were all these Adam fans on voting night? The kris fans are oviously more loyal fans otherwise Adam would have taken it.....and some Adam fans probably didn't vote cuz the judges and Adam himself acted like he had it in the bag. That was unfair - they were practically handing Adam the trophy in the final 4. The whole show made him center of attention - barely gave anyone else the time of day - and not cuz Adam was so much better - but because he was so out there - he had to dress funky and wear black nail polish to stand out - Kris was just an average guy that didn't try so hard to be "cool".

Just an interesting tidbit for those of you keeping track: As of Friday evening, Kris Allen has eight songs in the iTunes Top 100 chart, including the No. 1 song (the coronation song "No Boundaries," which is awful, but through no fault of Kris's). Adam also has eight songs on the chart, but his highest charting is at No. 6 ("Mad World"). It'll be interesting to see how those songs end up charting after the post-finale fervor dies down, but I think it suggests pretty concretely that there is very much a market for Kris Allen's music, and the sales seem to reflect the votes cast on the finale.

Kriss is the total package, I'm not surprised he won. Adam is talented but should not be the face of America.....Kriss is it - well done America

For all of you who haven't see the brake down of the American Idol final scores.
38 MILLION of votes out of 50 that were for Kris came from Arkansas' AT&T users. Arkansas is Kris' home town. Approximate population of Arkansas is 3 million. AT&T users have privilege of unlimitted texting over other voters who use different providers and have to deal with busy lines.
This is a direct prove that not only did Adam got robbed but also how unfair the voting system is to ALL contestants on the show, not only to Adam.

WOW last night finale i love them both and i know that they going to have amazing careers i think they are both winners and i wish them good luck

exactly Eric!!
Eric said on May. 23, 2009 at 2:05pm
Actually Helen, that appears to be a completely unsubstantiated rumor. AT&T has officially stated that it does not reveal how many votes were cast by any state. So that 38 million number is likely completely made up by an angry Adam fan.
Bob said on May. 23, 2009 at 3:57pm
I just have to chime in again and tell everyone to chill out. Kris won and everyone has to accept it. Kris got more votes. Fact. Now could we please let him enjoy the victory and stop bitching about it? Kris didn't do anything wrong and he should be able to feel good about his win. Kris can't control voting so why are we shitting all over him? This is shameful.
Rick said on May. 27, 2009 at 7:59am
Seems the AT&T thing has some merit but not as reported earlier. AT&T apparently were giving out free phones at Kris Allen friendly venues and teaching people how to send 10 text messages at once. Supposedly this was mentioned in the New York Times.
Eric said on May. 27, 2009 at 9:02am
Rick, if you can find a link to a recognized journalistic source with that information, I would love to see it. Because I did a quick search and came up with nothing but conspiracy theory-spouting web comments. That rumor is even more ridiculous than the alleged 36 million Arkansas votes. Why would AT&T back one contestant over another? What on earth could they possibly have to gain? Think critically, people!
Eric said on May. 27, 2009 at 10:05am
You know what tastes delicious? Crow. It appears that Rick was right: the New York Times itself has published an article reporting on AT&T employees providing a "small number of demo phones" to attendees at two Arkansas "Idol"-watching parties. I'm still dubious that this would have dramatically altered the final outcome (reports are now saying that it wasn't even close; that Kris trounced Adam in the votes), but it is shocking and awfully stupid on AT&T's part. e&%2334;=&scp=5&%2334;Kris%20Allen=&pagewanted=print>

BOB - DID YOU KNOW AT&T gave free phones to Kris fans and instructions on how to sent 10 votes at a push of a button. Could that be why 100 million votes were recieved is AT&T responsible for ADAM LAMBERTS DEFEAT are we to believe KRIS won fair and Square GET REAL IT WOULD appear some CHEATING was going on by KRIS fan base and you know thats what i like about ADAM if that was the case ADAM would BE FORGIVING.
Eric said on May. 27, 2009 at 7:01pm
Natalie, time for a reality check: SoundScan released the sales figures for Kris and Adam's version of the "No Boundaries" single this week. Kris's version sold 134,458 copies. Adam's sold 35,984. On the iTunes Top 100 chart, Kris has TWO songs in the Top 10. Adam's highest charter as I type this comes in at No. 20.
Fox and the "Idol" producers have publicly acknowledged the AT&T free phone situation, and both parties maintain that even though poor judgement was used by the AT&T employees, even if you took into account the maximum number of texts that could have been generated by those phones, it wouldn't have mattered. Kris apparently won by a large margin, which is clearly supported by the sales figures thus far.
I realize that you and many other people are upset about the outcome of the season finale, but there's no conspiracy going on here. Kris just ended up being more popular. America not only voted with its phones, it is voting with its dollars, and Kris is selling nearly quadruple what Adam is. It's time to let it go, get over it, and move on.
Bob said on May. 27, 2009 at 10:15pm
Oh, I'm sorry Natalie. Are you still talking?

Can we focus our attention on other matters of clearly grave importance, like finding out how Kenley Collins is doing?
Ash said on May. 28, 2009 at 11:44am
Omg - at first you guys were just mad that adam lost - but now you've managed to come up with some kind of conspiracy theory?? GIVE ME A BREAK! You need more things to fill up your time! Can you reallly convince yourself that a few extra phones really made the difference between adam winning or losing? Now your just getting ridiculous.

Kris was a better singer, Adam dressed flashier and got attention for that. Some of his songs were plain weird when compared to the original. Adam didn't announce he was gay until after the competition. I'm not against gay singers Boy George of culture club had a great voice.

I think So you think you can dance is way better than dancing with the stars. Kristy Yamagucci was great on DWTS but most of their contestants were bad dancers. The instructors danced good but the stars generally sucked at dancing. They should get Stars who actually danced before.
