"Dance Your Ass Off": Moving to the movies

The theme was famous songs from the movies, and each dancer was given a different style. It looked to me that each dancer was specifically assigned the movie/song/style, which seems like it could be ripe for producer interference. Meaning, contestants they like could be given styles that were more in their wheelhouse, while less popular contestants could be given something that would totally screw them over. I'm not sure that's what happened, but the conspiracy theorist in me wonders...

It needs to be said: Marisa Jaret Winokur looked TERRIBLE this episode, like a drunk, wind-blown floozy. Seriously, the styling was insane. And I like her - she's likable - but she's a pretty awful host. She can't be terrible and look terrible. What's the point?

Shayla picked hip-hop to "Low" from "Step Up 2 The Streets" (what a stupid film title). I would consider Shayla one of the biggest threats in the competition, and she was thrilled to get hip-hop, which she executed brilliantly. Shayla is outstanding, truly; she barely even looks overweight. She certainly doesn't move like she is. While she got noticeably less energetic as the routine went on, it was quite demanding, and she put everything into it. And she looked amazing while shaking that ass, I'm just going to say it. And she was still injured with her sprained ankle! Damn, girl. She got an average score of 8.3, and lost 2.60 percent of her body weight - that is HUGE - and has overall lost 19.2 pounds. Amazing.

Pinky pulled a tap routine (!) to "Shout" from "Animal House." Although it started with too much sitting, she got up and performed a very energetic and demanding routine. Her steps got heavier throughout (understandable), but I really thought it was impressive. Tap is hard, y'all, and requires a ton of skill and speed. It was fun and flirty, and she was engaging. The judges were a lot tougher on her than I think they should have been, and she ended up getting an average of 6.7. Add in her major weight loss of 2.3 percent of her body weight, and that meant that she was finally getting into the groove of the competition. Good. I like her.

Miles got a jazz number to "Fame" from, well, "Fame." Miles looked very heavy and sloppy. To me it looked like something out, like, "Napoleon Dynamite" - a joke. (The sparkly pants didn't help.) The whole thing was a mess, not together at all, and somehow lifeless despite a big lift. The judges seemed to hate it, and yet he still got a 5.3 average score - that's just under a point less than Pinky, and Miles was a disaster. That's a problem for me. He lost 2.48 percent of his body weight, and has lost 24.7 pounds. The guys are so hard to beat in the weight loss end, they shouldn't be given free passes on the dancing.

Mara got a tango to "Right Round" from "The Wedding Singer." The beginning was really bad, and wasn't much of a tango - the two of them were barely in hold throughout. Mara, however, was quite seductive, and the routine got markedly better as it went on. And Mara committed to it. I love her, I really do. The judges gave her an average score of 7.7 plus a 2.03 percent weight loss, so she was safe. Thank god. She is a DELIGHT. She's lost like 20 pounds to date! Amazeballs!

Ruben got a foxtrot to "Old Time Rock N Roll" from "Risky Business." Ruben is probably the frontrunner at this point. He has dance background. He was huge, and is a guy, so he could drop tons of weight. But I just don't like him. There's something manic in his eyes that I find totally off-putting. Hamminess is a big turn off for me, and this guy oozes it. However, I thought he did OK with the foxtrot. It was quite smooth in parts, but he was called out by Lisa Ann for the gimmicky, non-BS stuff in it. Got a 7.3 dance average (better than Pinky; bullshit), and lost 3.64 percent of his body weight. Ridiculous. He's lost more than 40 pounds since the beginning. Can anyone beat him at this point?

That left a Final 2 of Trice and Alicia. Trice got a Broadway number to "All That Jazz" from "Chicago." I loved it! It made me want to watch an all plus-sized rendition of "Chicago" ("Deep-Dish Chicago"?). One problem: her partner, Jesus (from "SYTYCD" Season 3), really let her down in the middle, giving her little to do while he showed off. She lost 1.55 percent of her body weight, and she's lost a total of 26.8 pounds.

Alicia was given a jive to "Maniac" from "Flashdance." I kind of think she got screwed with that one. Jive is HARD. Alicia was doing REALLY well in the beginning, but then it got muddled in the middle. I think she actually got ahead of her partner, and her energy level just plummeted. But she did the Jennifer Beals hair whip, which I appreciated. She just mugs SO BADLY. I want her to pull it back. And all the running around the stage looked kind of goofy. She lost 1.76 percent of her body weight, and man, you could just see the irritation on her face. I get the impression Alicia gets frustrated very easily. Her dance score average was 6.7, which was enough to put her ahead of Miles. And I think that's right; Miles was terrible, and Alicia did a LOT better than him.

Trice got herself a dance score of 7, which also put her over Miles, meaning that the worst dancer of the night got the axe again. That reflects well on the show - the only truly bad dancer to leave so far has been Brandon, and he was totally slacking on the weight-loss aspect of the competition. Although it is kind of fascinating that more often than not, neither of the Bottom 2 end up getting eliminated. Huh.

Next week: swing dance! Oh, that should be fun.
